The Travel Bug
No, it's not the dreaded flu bug but the welcome travel bug that is hitting us as the year draws to a close. Everyone seem to be travelling not just adult travelers but I've seen school children on overseas excursions and even babies. It's not unique seeing children
and babies travel but the point I make about school children is that they are on their own. During my time, an excursion meant going to the zoo. Now excursions mean travelling overseas to visit a farm in Melbourne or the Great Wall in China. I envy them, these young travellers, the world is becoming smaller for them. You can thank the LCCs for that, now that AirAsia fl ies to Paris as well as London. Can you believe it an LCC flying
to Paris? Before you know it, they'll be fl ying to New York next. Oh… I'm
so tempted to take these trips, I feel like calling AirAsia and saying just help book me on that flight, I'll pay. But the most important move that LCCs have made is in generating ancillary revenues. This model of pay only if you want the service is starting to take off in full service carriers too. Now SIA charges for extra leg room, let's see what follows next. This trend of paying for ancillary
services will revolutionise travel , arguably it may make travel even more affordable. Ancillary revenues are the buzzword in travel now and will be for some time, especially as some GDS build software to deal with booking ancillary services. As for me, I'll bring my own pillow,
blanket and novel and I think that will help me survive the trip to Paris on a low-cost carrier.

announces the opening of Shangri-La Hotel, Paris in the French capital's 16th arrondissement, on 17 December 2010. Built in 1896 as the private home of Em- peror Napoleon Bonaparte's grand- nephew, Prince Roland Bonaparte, Shangri-La Hotel, Paris achieves a balance between the group's signature style of hospitality and French art de vivre.
The restored landmark retains
its residential heritage and offers 81 rooms including 27 suites, making it the most intimate of all Shangri-La Hotels worldwide. Internationally acclaimed interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon crafted each room individually to retain the residential ambience while provid-
ing all modern day comforts. Unique in Paris, 40 per cent of the rooms and 60 per cent of the suites feature unob- structed views of the Eiffel Tower and the River Seine below.
