50 ISSUE 105 / 2017 INDIE Mary Gauthier is due to release her most important work yet, Rifles & Rosary Beads, on January 26th, 2018. This is a project co-written with US Veterans and their families, creating eleven personal and powerful accounts of the struggles that they face, home and abroad. Every year over 7400 former and current members of the United States Armed services take their own life. Even though these songs are written with US servicemen, soldiers in the UK are dealing with very similar situations. These songs were created as part of the non- profit programme, Songwriting With Soldiers, which brings together professional songwriters with wounded veterans and active duty military. The stories on the album will vary, for example, 'The War After The War' is a prose about living with somebody who has returned from deployment. Mary Gauthier's upcoming album is not only relatable but it is helping veterans deal with and share their experiences, ones only they can understand. NEWS: MARY GAUTHIER'S UPCOMING ALBUM HONOURS THE LIVES OF VETERANS ALBUM OF THE MONTH: KING KRULE Known to most as King Krule, Archy Ivan Marshall is the cool kid of modern indie rock. If James Blake and Jamie T had a baby – King Krule would be the lovechild. Notoriously picky with collaborations – and rightfully so – the singer-songwriter even turned down an opportunity to work with Kanye West in 2013. Yet despite catching the eye of some of the industry's biggest names, King Krule is seemingly never one to bask in his recognition. His debut full-length album released in 2013, 6 Feet Beneath The Moon, was an astounding success with both fans and critics alike. Now Marshall is back with more magic this year, with his 19-track album The OOZ. A similar dense, grungy and somewhat romantic sound that's matured since 6 Feet Beneath The Moon. The OOZ takes the listener on a journey of genres, telling tales of loneliness and depression, the album is emotional and raw as ever in true King Krule style. Rich, complex and mysterious, most tracks sound as if they were conceptualised in a hazy half-dream. TRACK OF THE MONTH: DYGL 'Let it Sway' is the new single from Tokyo based indie-rock band DYGL. Produced by The Strokes' guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. The band consists of members Nobuki Akiyama (vocal & guitar), Kohei Kamoto (drums), Yotaro Kachi (bass), and Yosuke Shimonaka (guitar). Initally the group played their first few gigs for fun, and after realising how well received they were, DYGL was formed. DYGL self released their first EP in 2015, followed by 'Waste of Time', mixed and mastered by Aaron Dobos (Avalanches) in 2016. The band continues to hone their skills to combine the factors that influence their love for indie-rock. 'Let It Sway' shows this off effortlessly. It starts with an irresistible beat and punchy production - that will be a hit with any indie fan.
