12 / JANUARY.FEBRUARY.2018 USICERINKS.COM Industry News Updates from around the rink Another Bright Spot in San Diego , The San Diego Ice Arena (SDIA) has been named 2017 Energy Showcase Winner for Sports Venue. The honor is the result of a 17-year plan. Opened in 1974, the SDIA was acquired in 2000 by Mark and Philip Linssen. The Linssens had a vision: become more energy efficient without compromising all that SDIA has built within the community. "When we took over the arena, we were at about 3,700 kwh/day and didn't think we could come close to zero net-energy," said Mark Linssen. "However, after putting together a plan, being innovative and implementing more than 11 energy-efficiency measures we are now at 750 kWh/day and foresee a day that we may get to our zero net energy goal." SDIA installed an Energy Management System that can be expandable for future equipment additions and optimizes the sav- ings for the facility by running all the various components from one program. The SDIA was also wasting 3,000 gallons of ice down the drain when the ice resurfacer was finished. They knew there had to be a way to reuse the ice and found the sub-cooler snow melt. Now the ice they collect converts into water, is held in a reclamation tank and then is used to sub-cool the refrigerated liquid line that runs under the ice to keep the ice cold, surplus water is then used in the evaporative condenser. But that's not all. Not only did SDIA install all new LED lighting, but they added a dimmer to the system as well. During hockey games they can crank the lights to 100 percent with the option at other times to dim the lights to 45 percent of the origi- nal lighting—and customers see no difference. In addition to the upgraded lighting, SDIA has a new silver e-ceiling insulation which helps keep the cool air in the building. The facility is looking to enter its next 40 years with renewed commitment to reduced costs and energy independence. SDIA is a family-owned business that focuses on family and fun! We have a program for everyone in the family whether it's learning to play hockey, playing on a hockey team, figure skating, skating school, birthday parties, fundraisers, ballet, or just skating on a public session for fun.
