50 / JANUARY.FEBRUARY.2018 USICERINKS.COM ASK RINK You have rink questions, RINK has rink answers Send your rink questions to: INFO@USICERINKS.COM WHAT IS A 'STOP WORK' POLICY, AND DO WE NEED ONE FOR OUR RINK? The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has a Workers' Right to Refuse Dangerous Work regulation that probably best explains a "Stop Work" policy. Essentially, any time an employee believes that their working conditions are unsafe or unhealthy, and their employer will not correct the hazard or assign other work, then the employee has the right to stop work. One of the most common Stop Work policies in an ice rink is driving the ice resurfacer off the surface when skaters enter the ice before the operator has completed his/her resurface. Once players and coaches have left the surface, the ice resurfacer operator would bring the machine back out onto the surface, and complete the resurface. Clearly stated signs on rink entrance doors and communicating these policies with your user groups will go a long way in preventing. YOU GUYS HAVE ANY IDEAS ON HOW I CAN GET MY BOSS TO LET ME GO TO A CLASS? I REALLY WANT TO BE A CIT. This is a timely question for this issue of RINK! Obviously we're promoting NARCE, and we do get this question often. Many decision makers fall into the habit of simply responding, "It's not in the budget" anytime they hear a request for money. It's important to explain how taking a class would benefit your rink, and more importantly how it would benefit the other employees as well as your cus- tomers. We list the topics covered in each course. Which ones would learning more about help the rink save money? Which ones would make you a bet- ter employee? It's your responsibility to research the cost of travel, available train- ing, locations, and all of the associated costs. You might find out the number you come up with is significantly less than what your boss thought it would be.
