For you, as his coach, to see him respond by making the game-winning kick against Iowa, how'd you feel? Gibboney: "Obviously we put him out there, we ex- the balls you're kicked. We had a couple return balls Saturday, and we just didn't play very well. But before that, the last couple games, those sky punts, you're not going to get returnable balls. If they're punting from the 50 in, the guy has to punt 30 yards. You're not going to get good returns. That's just the reality of it. There are a lot of variables. J.B. Gibboney pect him to make the kick. ... We wouldn't have done it if we didn't think he'd make it. We'll never put these kids in a position where they can't succeed. To see him actually do it was great for him, great for his confidence and great for the team. It was a great effort by everybody. Did you see him get nervous at all? Gibboney: "No. I don't ever worry about that with ... You can never simulate that (situation). Ever. Gold and Black: Is Griggs a pretty even-keeled guy? " Paul. There's nothing you can do to simulate that in practice. You do the best you can off the field and on the field to prepare somebody for that situation. When you're in the situation, you have to rely on all that training and fortu- nately, he was able to knock it through." Gold and Black: Before the season, we talked about the core guys, your blockers, so that's hurt us some. We struggled a little bit early with decision-making, when to return certain balls, when not to, when to fair catch. ... Am I satisfied? Hell no. No. It's not good enough. It's not up to our standards. But at the same time, you have to return your punt returners and how you needed to get better production from them. I know you don't look only at the numbers (4.0 ypr), so how do you think they're doing? Gibboney: "We've been nicked up personnel-wise to tential on kickoff returns, but to see him actually step up and do it is another thing. How do you think he's done with Raheem Mostert out? Gibboney: "We haven't done as good of a job up front Gold and Black: We knew Akeem Hunt had po- " as what we've needed to do. ... But he's fine. I don't have a problem with him or Danny (Anthrop) touching the ball. They both have a shot to go every time they touch it. We really believe that. Again, we only had a couple return balls on Saturday and a couple guys do a couple things better, there they go. Gold and Black: Thomas Meadows had a bit of a shaky start to the season on kickoffs but seems to have been pretty good since. Gibboney: "For his age, he's doing " OK. He just needs to continue to develop, and he will. We're constantly refining tech- nique, and that's what you have to do. He's only going to get better. He has come so far since early in the season. Is there still room to improve? Yes. He knows that. But at the same time, he has come a long way since early in the season, both mentally, physically, technically, and he'll continue to get better. — Stacy Clardie " Media Partner Media Partner GOLDANDBLACK EXPRESS • VOLUME 23, EXPRESS 11 • 32 Cartney had gone 1-of-2 earlier, says he felt good; he tries to treat every kick the same, whether it's a poten- tial game-winner or not. "As soon as I kicked the kick, I knew I hit it pretty well," Griggs said. "I didn't hear anything, so I knew it'd gotten away clean. I looked up and saw where the ball was going and just kind of stood there in disbelief. I didn't know what to do. " et Luncheon on Tuesday in downtown Indianapolis.
