Describe your style in a few words? Versatile, eclectic, powerful, soulful, multicultural, socially up-to-date. Where are you based now and your thoughts about it? Philippe: I have relocated to London with my family. I travel to and from Geneva as I still have my beautiful studio there. I love my little space. I had it for years and couldn't leave it when we decided to move back to London. We spent more than a decade in Geneva and it's a great spot but sometimes it's missing the flavour of the big city. London is great, dynamic, inspiring. Cesare: I live in Sao Paulo, Brazil at the moment. I decided to move here with my wife 3 years ago but I've been touring Europe, Asia and America a few times already since then . After living in Milano, London and Berlin we felt the need to take a break from Europe. I love Sao Paulo, it's a demanding massive city, but very exciting and inspiring. It has everything I need. It can be stressful and little aggressive like many other big world centers but I'm a city boy. You guys haven't been releasing for a while now, are you excited for the new EP coming out on Cocoon? That's not 100% exact. Yes, our last EP on Derrick May's Transmat was released at the start of 2016 but meanwhile we released 'We are the sound' on Serialism Records, Cesare's label, with takes by Livio & Roby, Alexkid, Alex Smoke and Anushka and also a couple vinyl only releases on our label Azimute Music..the Green and Yellow. But yeah, those are more underground outputs for sure, especially when our followers are used to seeing us on Crosstown Rebels, Transmat or Bedrock. We are excited to go back to the major scene now, with this new EP on Cocoon. Who is singing in the original 'The Secret' for Cocoon? We cannot disclose the name of the singer in the EP, unfortunately for a matter of exclusivity we have been granted the use of the vocal but cannot disclose the name of the feature. It's a strange situation cause she's actually a good friend and we recorded the vocals especially for this project but I guess who's deeper in the scene will realize who she is. How long have you been producing? Philippe: I started around 1989, but my first record I think came out in 1992. I don't remember exactly. It was all different and the first attempt was actually so crazy that no label took it! Cesare: I started producing in 1999, or at least that's when my learning process started. My first real production was the soundtrack for an Italian movie in 2005, but my first club music vinyl came out in 2006. My first attempt to produce a record was a bootleg of Bjork my friend Denis Longhi (now producer of big Festivals in Italy) which I made around 1999.Then I decided to study sound engineering and it all started. What does Azimute have coming up for us in 2018? And are your projects Cesare vs. Disorder and Quenum separate? P+C: We have been cooking a lot of music, together and separately. First of all our album is finally finished. It took more than a year of work but we are happy to present it to the world soon. It's something different than our usual sound, it's not club music, it's more like a 90's trip, something a little more complex. To listen rather than dance. We have involved amazing Swiss musicians Pierre Audetat and Christophe Calpini and Boston born Jazz singer Mike Ladd also known for some of their work on Ninja Tune and !K7. And also a very special singer from London Rosie Holloway, a multi talented Swiss engineer Lad Agabekov. It's our baby and we cannot wait to see the reaction of the public once the record is out there. We are also preparing another EP for Detroit label Transmat and one limited edition vinyl only BLUE on our AZIMUTE label. Cesare: I've been also working by myself a lot this year and I will release a few records before the summer. One on Vakant with a remix by Perlon talent Spacetravel, one on Russian label Nervmusic, one on New York's finest underground party Blackmarket membership new vinyl only label. And one on my Serialism records with a remix by Romanian star Dan Andrei. And more EP's and remixes work in progress which I will disclose little later in the year. Philippe: Since last summer we have not seen each other so often, now that I'm in London and Cez is in Brazil. So I've taken this as an opportunity to work a lot in the studio, on my solo projects. Soon will start pre-sale of my record on Alex Arnout's Dogmatik label and an EP on Alexi Delano's label, I've also done a remix of Decompression, a track by Mathew Jonson that will come out on his label, Freedom Engine. And I can announce that I've finally decided to start a new solo project under another name, based more on big Techno sounds. Look out for more information out there soon. 2018 / ISSUE 106 Electronic duo Azimute combines the skills of veteran French DJ Philippe Quenum and Italian multi talented artist Cesare Marchese (aka Cesare vs Disorder). We spoke to the pair in between shows and studio work about their new EP on Cocoon Recordings, their past, present and future.
