MARCH 2018 THE WOLVERINE 17 INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS Women's gymnastics sopho- more Polina Shchennikova came to Michigan from Ever- green, Colo., in the fall of 2016 after training with 5280 Gym- nastics since 2015. The sport has been heavily engrained in Shchennikova's family — both of her parents were gymnasts for the Soviet National Team. The sophomore has already picked up two event titles this season — one on bars and one on beam — and will look to build on those performances going forward. Here are a few other inter- esting facts you may not have known about her: Nickname: "Everyone calls me Po." Favorite restaurant in Ann Arbor: "I really like the salmon from Bravo's, so I'd have to go with that." Best meal she can cook by herself: "Salmon. I love salmon." Sports she plays besides gymnastics: "I used to dance, but I don't anymore." Hobbies: "I really like to color in my spare time. Does hang- ing out with friends count as a hobby? If so, that too." Favorite TV show: "I love 'Psych.' Right now I'm really into 'Blackcollar.'" Favorite movie: "I like 'White Chicks' for a good laugh." Dream vacation: "I've always wanted to go to Bora Bora or Fiji or somewhere tropical." Favorite venue she's been to: "I went to the Pepsi Center in Denver once and thought that was pretty cool." Favorite professional athlete: "It's hard to pick just one — I've been inspired by quite a few gymnasts." Role model: "My parents." Why she chose Michigan: "Michigan just had the right atmosphere I was look- ing for. They were very competitive in their athletics and academics, and I love being challenged — it just seemed like the perfect place where I could be chal- lenged in both." What she hopes to do after gymnastics: "I hardly ever know what I'm going to do tomorrow. There are so many options I have in mind right now, and it's too hard to choose just one. The future is still wide open." Her overall experience at Michigan: "My freshman year was hard, but my sophomore year has been so much better. I've met so many new people and am happy to be a part of a team.
