26 THE WOLVERINE MARCH 2018 JAKE MOODY OPTS FOR HIS DREAM SCHOOL Northville (Mich.) High kicker Jake Moody had a few full-ride opportuni- ties — including from Central Michi- gan — that he was heavily consider- ing, but decided to attend Michigan, his dream school. "It was a really tough decision be- cause of the people at Central Michi- gan," Moody said. "All of the coaches were great, and it felt like one big fam- ily there. "But I had a gut feeling and I've always wanted to go to Michigan, so that's why I chose Michigan." The 6-0, 175-pounder chose U-M but is still unsure of which route he will take to campus. He is fine with how- ever it ends up playing out though. "Coach [Chris] Partridge visited me at my school and gave me a few op- tions," Moody explained. "If scholar- ships open up, I'll do a blueshirt and be on scholarship this fall. If not, I'll grayshirt most likely." As a blueshirt, Moody could start at U-M right away, essentially as a walk- on, and join the team immediately. He would then wait for a scholarship and would count toward the 2019 class. As a grayshirt, Moody would wait a semester before enrolling at Michigan in January 2019 and the scholarship would count against the 2019 signing class. Moody has worked out with former Michigan kicker Brandon Kornblue and his kicking academy, and the ex- pert's scouting report on the in-state kicker is strong. "Jake is currently ranked as the Fab 50's top nationally ranked kicker for the class of 2018," Kornblue ex- plained. "Without question, he is an FBS scholarship kicker. Jake also takes his academics seriously and is part of the National Honor Society." During his senior season, Moody made field goals from 55, 57 and 58 yards off a half-inch block. The 58- yard field goal is on record as the sec- ond longest in Michigan state history. He also holds the state record for most made field goals in a high school ca- reer with 39. Because of his stellar senior season, Moody was named to The Detroit Free Press' 2017 All-State Dream Team. — Brandon Brown Preferred Walk-On Spotlight Jim Harbaugh and his staff are al- ways looking for capable, hard-work- ing young men to join the program as preferred walk-ons. Those guys don't get the glory, but they do push the scholarship athletes and provide valu- able practice depth — every once in a while, one will really jump up and make an impact. Here's a look at those who have ac- cepted a preferred walk-on spot with the program in the 2018 class: LUCAS ANDRIGHETTO ATH • 5-11, 185 Mountain View (Calif.) Saint Francis Andrighetto played both running back and strong safety in high school and will show up at Michigan as an athlete. He and his Saint Francis Lanc- ers won the 2A state championship in 2017 and finished the season 11-4. He carried the ball 50 times for 344 yards (6.9 yards per attempt) and scored three touchdowns as a running back. On defense, he recorded 14 tack- les and an interception. Off the field, Andrighetto boasts a 3.48 GPA and scored a 1260 on the SAT. LUKE BUCKMAN TE • 6-5, 215 Holland (Mich.) High Buckman was originally committed to Grand Valley State University, but chose to walk on at Michigan over the opportunity at GVSU as well as of- fers from Butler, Morehead State and Valparaiso. The big tight end helped lead the Dutch to their third playoff appearance in school history as Hol- land finished with a 6-4 overall record in 2017. He plans on enrolling in the Ross School of Business at U-M. GEORGE CARATAN P • 6-2, 210 Oakdale (Conn.) St. Thomas More School Caratan will compete with scholar- ship punter Brad Robbins in the fall for a chance to win the starting job and will also try his leg at kicking off. He spent his first four years of high school at Los Angeles Loyola before finishing with a prep year at St. Thomas More. During his short stint at STM, Caratan averaged 46.0 yards per punt and 35 of his 41 kickoffs were touch- backs. KRAIG CORRELL C • 6-5, 280 Blairstown (N.J.) Blair Academy The Bucs of Blair Academy finished 6-2 on the year in 2017 with Correll manning the middle of the line on both sides of the ball. ADAM CULP K • 6-3, 180 Ithaca (Mich.) High Culp will come to Michigan as a kicker, but he was a darn good wide receiver for powerhouse Ithaca. The wiry pass catcher had 40 receptions for 567 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior, including two scores in the Division 6 state championship game. Culp and Ithaca fell to Jackson Lu- During his senior season, Jake Moody made field goals from 55, 57 and 58 yards off a half- inch block. The 58-yarder is the second longest in state history.
