FORMER MASTERCHEF TV COMPETITOR, KATRINA KOZAR, TALKS ABOUT HEALTHY COOKING Dishing Out the Secrets BY LARRY SAAVEDRA T he FOX television show, MasterChef, features the widely popular and internationally acclaimed chef Gordon Ramsey. As the host of the show, he's been known to have a temper, but it's the MasterChef competitors that give the show its drama and make it a major hit to culinary fans. One of these competitors was Katrina Kozar, a self-taught chef from Wisconsin, who faced off with the fiery TV personality, and captured the hearts of viewing audiences in the process. What we learned about Kozar, is that her personal story of determination is powerful and true, giving meaning to the expression, "When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade." Kozar grew up in a Milwaukee working- class family, and gleaned everything she could about organically grown, home-style cooking alongside her sisters, mother and father. This was, until the day she set off on her own to audition for the most popular cooking show on television and found sudden fame in front of millions of viewers. At that time, people learned about her secret to success and how eating healthy is easier than one might think. GROWING UP IN THE KITCHEN "I'm the youngest of four girls, and my parents really believed in home- cooked meals," Kozar said. "After my grandmother passed away from cancer, my mother wanted to prepare healthy foods. She encouraged us from a very young age to make meals from the freshest foods and vegetables." "My dad was a master fisherman and he loved grilling fresh fish, and so we learned essential cooking skills at an early age.
