54 ISSUE 107 / 2018 REGGAE TRACK OF THE MONTH: COMMON KINGS X KAT DAHLIA Donovan Germain produces the upcoming Remembering Joseph Hill double album paying tribute to famed singer-songwriter Joseph Hill of roots reggae group Culture who passed away in 2006. Grammy nominated reggae band the Common Kings team up with American artist Kat Dahlia on the new single 'Champion'. The song is packed full of Island vibes and acoustic soul, a feel-good love song like this doesn't come along often. The Common Kings velvety harmonies take you away as they sing, "I wouldn't trade you for the world because you are the champion, and I know, you're one in a million...I want you to be my number one...It's all for you." While Kat Dahlia's refreshing and lush vocals only add more flavour to the passionate track, as the song comes to an end Dahlia and the Common Kings keep us hooked with a gorgeous and spellbinding duet. "Joseph Hill was one of my favourite artists," Germain told the Jamaica Observer, "But you don't hear a lot of Culture songs on the radio. I want to introduce him to a different generation." Queen Ifrica, Marcia Griffiths and Tarrus Riley are among the artists covering songs from the group known for tracks like 'Two Sevens Clash' and 'International Herb'. Expect an early May release for the album. A Dub version of the tribute was already released last November. NEWS: PENTHOUSE PAYS TRIBUTE TO CULTURE FRONTMAN JOSEPH HILL ALBUM OF THE MONTH: PAYOH SOULREBEL Cool Up Records and versatile singer Payoh SoulRebel bring us Payoh's first solo Andalusian reggae album. What A Vibe transitions skillfully from dub, soul, roots and different moods. From the opening soulful track, 'Lone Ranger' to 'Time To Refresh', featuring Burian Fyah, this is a pure roots single that blends an eclectic mix of instruments alongside Payoh's and Fyah's voices effortlessly. However, it is songs like 'Ganga Tree' and the title track 'What A Vibe' that make this LP one of a kind. Both tracks drop necessary gems of knowledge as smooth beats and grooves are amplified by rich sounding live backdrops. For the next track 'Happiness', Payoh is joined by Tunelon Iration, together they bring a more melodic vibe to the track that is startlingly addictive as you jam to each hypnotic beat. Finishing off with a unique dub version of 'Sweet Music', 'Sweet Dub' shows off the varied productions skills of Cool Up Records, as Payoh's distorted but soothing vocals keep you intrigued till the end.
