12 / MARCH.APRIL.2018 USICERINKS.COM Industry News Updates from around the rink Orono Ice Arena is Expanding by Shrinking , What do you do when you have a fantastic facility, but a change is needed in order to continue program and player growth? You make a change. The owners of Orono Ice Arena in Orono, Minnesota, were recently faced with this same challenge. The original design had an Olympic sized-rink (98.4' x 197') and four standard locker rooms which left little room to grow. The varsity boys' and girls' teams had made due by creating small locker rooms out of converted storage rooms but there was no room for dryland training or even space for teams to warm-up prior to hitting the ice. The facility wanted to do better for the athletes, but had a tight budget. Orono Youth Hockey partnered with HTG Architects to expand by shrink- ing. The first step in the process was to shrink the Olympic rink to NHL size (85' x 200'). This created 15' of new space for expanded locker rooms on the main level. HTG maximized the use of this new space by creating four new locker rooms with dedicated showers, plus new varsity locker rooms with dedicated showers and shared toilet facilities. A mezzanine that can be accessed by an elevator or stairs was added in the new space above the new locker rooms. The mezzanine has a warm viewing club room area for parents and fans, but the majority of the space is dedi- cated to dryland training. With a wall of glass that overlooks the rink, players now have a dedicated training space and shoot- ing lanes. These improvements effectively doubled the number of athletes that can be training in the facility at one time. The training space is also a new revenue source for the rink—a win-win for every- one involved.
