H istorically the Winter Olympics have helped to significantly increase awareness and interest in ice sports among the general public. This is a gift for our industry because it normally leads to a large boost in public skating and lesson program participation in the months following the Olympics and into the next year. Now that the 2018 Olympics have come and gone, hopefully your rink has a plan in place to capitalize on this gift we receive once every four years. Key to the success of your post-Olympic plan will be your team's performance. Oftentimes after a long and stressful fall/winter season, many rink operators are on the verge of burnout. Burnout can result in lower productivity and engagement as well as higher absenteeism and turnover. Obviously, if burnout sets in to members of your team, executing your plan successfully is going to be difficult. Burnout is more likely to happen when team members: • Expect too much of themselves. • Never feel that the work they are doing is good enough. • Feel inadequate or incompetent. • Feel unappreciated for their work efforts. • Have unreasonable demands placed upon them. • Are in roles that are not a good fit. You can help team members avoid burnout by: • Providing clear, reasonable and realistic expectations. • Providing the necessary resources to meet expectations. • Enforcing reasonable work hours; making sure breaks are being taken. • Allowing team members to do what they do best. • Recognizing their effort and listening to their feedback. • Providing ongoing training and continuing education opportunities. With all of that being said, I encourage you to check out the 16th Annual North American Rink Conference & Expo (NARCE) event brochure in the middle of this issue of RINK. NARCE is the perfect opportunity for you and your team members to recharge by getting out of the rink for a few days to increase your knowledge, network with hundreds of your industry peers and have a little fun! — Jeff Theiler, Chief Operating Officer, Serving The American Rinks Opening ADDRESS Welcome from Jeff Theiler 10 / MARCH.APRIL.2018 USICERINKS.COM Signs and Solutions to Avoiding Burnout THE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE UNITED STATES ICE RINK ASSOCIATION MARCH/APRIL 2018 // VOL. 21, NO. 2 USICERINKS.COM // INFO@USICERINKS.COM C E O Steve Farbman P R E S I D E N T James McEwen S E N I O R V I C E P R E S I D E N T David Jensen C O N T R O L L E R Mike Schwarz C R E AT I V E D I R E C T O R Rob Johnson A RT D I R E C T O R Mike DeArmond S E N I O R D E S I G N E R Brandon Favre D E S I G N E R S Annie Gernes, Kelsey Cherwinka A D S A L E S Bryan Nelson M A R K E T I N G & AC C O U N T M A NAG E R Jessica Disch E D I T O R S : Aaron Paitich, Jessi Pierce M A R K E T I N G C O O R D I NAT O R Elizabeth Boger RINK Magazine is the definitive business publication for professionals in the ice rink industry and is the leading source for information on facility management, operations and programming.
