GUESTLIST 2018 / ISSUE 108 11 329 financial institutions invested $525 billion in the top 20 companies producing nuclear weaponry between January 2014 and October 2017. The report found that only two banks operating in the UK invested no money in companies producing nuclear weapons, namely The Co-operative Bank and Triodos. Four banks operating in the UK were praised for policies that exclude nuclear weapon producers from their investments. These policies, however, contain loopholes that allow these four to "allow for some investments." One of those four banks, Barclays, is guilty of investing almost $8 billion in nuclear weapon manufacturers through loopholes, making them one of the biggest investors in Europe. Overall there has been a decrease in the number of banks investing in these companies, but an $81 billion increase in the total money invested. Banks invested in nuclear weapon manufacturers by owning or managing shares, bonds or outstanding loans, they also assisted with share and bond issuances. There is hope that banks will eventually move away from investment, following the UN's introduction of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Although all nine nuclear-armed countries (the US, Britain, France, Russia, India, Pakistan, North Korea, China and Israel) abstained from supporting the treaty, the majority of UN members adopted it, and there is growing pressure on banks to now invest ethically. MAKING A KILLING, YOUR BANK IS INVESTING IN NUCLEAR WEAPONS The 2018 Don't Bank on the Bomb report was recently published by PAX, an organisation that promotes global peace and a member of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear weapons. The report studies the global investments of banks in nuclear weapon producers. The best example of this is fizzy drinks, half of which have more than the recommended daily adult intake. Unfortunately, glucose can lead to obesity and heart disease. The most effective way to get out of this cycle is to switch to a ketogenic diet, meaning a diet where ketones are being created, not glucose. Thanks to the amount of sugar present in food, our bodies are adapted to using glucose but they are very flexible. If deprived of food that contains glucose (primarily carbohydrates and sugar), whilst also being provided with lots of fat, it will not take long for it to switch over to a state of ketosis. Eating lots of natural fats such as butter, oils, fish, will help you on your way to ketosis. THE KETOGENIC DIET: FAT IS NOT FATTENING Go on, book your holidays and travel Travelling is an eye opener, it opens your mind to new horizons and puts your life into perspective. So go on, travel the world, go away on weekends with your friends or your bf/gf, let your hair down. Fall in love We all know how it feels to fall in love especially when it is mutual. That feeling that rushes through your body and your soul. The fast heartbeats, the weak knees or the shiny eyes, just fall in love with that handsome one, in a strange city for the thrill of it. The aftermath, well, you can deal with it later. Live in the moment. Do something different every day Say bye, bye to your routine, work, home, food, bed. Do something different every day. If it is calling your mum or texting a friend you have not spoken to in 10 years, do it! Eat rice instead of pasta, drink more water instead of energy drinks to keep you awake, sleep on the left side of your bed instead of the right, do something different every single day. It is the little things, always the little things Appreciate the little things, in life. If your niece gives you that drawing that looks like a scribble just accept it happily. Whatever it is, a smile from a stranger, your mum buying you food to keep you alive, just appreciate those simple gestures and be grateful. HAPPY DAYS! A GUIDE TO HAPPINESS To us, happiness cannot be labeled. Happiness is whatever puts you in a state of appreciation, what keeps you grounded, what makes you feel on top of the world. Here is a few more key tips to keep you feeling happy in your everyday life. THAT'S RIGHT, WORK HARDER You want to improve your live you should do 99% of what you need to do. In order to step up your position you need to step up the amount of work you need to do. One common trait amongst successful people is they are not afraid of hard work and neither should you be. It may be working harder at getting up in the morning, it might be working harder at being a good friend and if you are just working on building something new the answer is to work harder. CAT RACE The vast majority of food commonly eaten by people throughout the UK contains a truly ridiculous amount of sugar.
