Rich the Kid is a quirky Queen's rapper currently taking the industry and internet by storm. K Koke is one of the most respected emcees's in the British rap scene. Hip hop legends Onyx are to play a gig at the East London venue Archspace on the 6th May. The rapper has lived through it all - the struggle of early road rap, the boom that came with the first wave of grime and road rap's ascent to the mainstream (i.e. Giggs and Skepta) and he's stuck around for grime and road rap's resurgence. However, Koke is playing catch up, a spell in prison meant he hasn't been able to enjoy the immense revival of rap in Britain as much as he could have. But such is the status of Koke in the British scene and the zeal of his ultra-loyal fan base, that there is mounting anticipation for his album- FFF (Fighting For Freedom). In the leadup to the LP, Koke has released his latest single, 'Letter'. The track takes us into the artist's mindset and reveals the struggle Koke has fought in one of the most difficult periods of his life. Emcees Fredro Starr and Sticky Fingaz could have been mistaken for thinking their cultural relevance had faded. Yet the rapid development of subgenres in the 2010s, many coming from Atlanta, birthed a southern take on violent, noisy rap. Whereas Onyx's beats were skeletal, hard-hitting with snappy drums, the new Atlanta sound was wedded to the drop-heavy trap style. Onyx are rarely credited with providing the foundations for this new subgenre, but fast forward a few years and there's no denying their legacy. Onyx perfected the shout-anthem, providing the blueprints for artists like 6ix9ine to add a modern twist to it. With his success many have developed a taste for the subgenre and Onyx are enjoying a return to the rap scene.
