50 ISSUE 108 / 2018 INDIE The sombre, minimalist music of California singer-songwriter Liz Harris, aka Grouper, strikes a bewitching balance of cryptic and confessional. Harris looks set to continue in this enigmatic vein with Grid of Points, her first solo album since 2014's critically acclaimed Ruins. "I wrote these songs over a week and a half; they stopped abruptly when I was interrupted by a high fever," Harris said in a statement. "Though brief, it is complete. The intimacy and abbreviation of this music allude to an essence… The space left after matter has departed, a stage after the characters have gone, the hollow of some central column, missing." So far, so Grouper then. The album's first single – the piano-led 'Parking Lot' – is already available on SoundCloud and her upcoming LP will be out on April 27th. NEWS: GROUPER ANNOUNCES NEW ALBUM, RELEASES HAUNTING FIRST SINGLE 'PARKING LOT' ALBUM OF THE MONTH: MGMT It's been eleven long years since MGMT first graced our eardrums with their debut album Oracular Spectacular. Now they're here again with their fourth offspring, Little Dark Age, a sparkly and colourful yet also dark and gothic LP, rolling together sounds from the 80's, 90's and noughties all up into one miraculously '2018' sounding creation. The opening track, 'She Works Out Too Much', undeniably transports us straight to the world of 80's fitness videos, to a time of legwarmers and lycra. The album then takes its first dark turn in the shape of the title track. 'Little Dark Age' has a clear gothic new-wave sound, showing the well-defined new influences that the band are now experimenting with. Other album tracks such as 'TSLAMP' (Time Spent Looking At My Phone) and 'Days That Got Away' look at our relationship with the internet and technology, almost in a lazy dreamy haze, that the band seem to be saying is the modern world. Little Dark Age creates contrasting images of other worlds that all seem weird and fictional at first but actually can be very closely linked to our own millennial culture. With ideas of death and our virtual selves, versus life and the real, soundtracked by dreamy tunes and weird sounds. TRACK OF THE MONTH: THEODORE The Greek performer returns with another sterling single, 'Towards? (for what is to come)'. The track is a sonic stream of consciousness, capturing every nuance of Theodore's technical wizardry. Covering a wide sonic scope, he drowns ethereal melodies in a cauldron of psychedelic sounds. Speaking of the song Theodore says "'Towards? (for what is to come)' is going to be the first song of my upcoming album. This is the initial question I will be exploring throughout the album. It is about the two different sides of one's personality; the conscious and the magical one and inspired by the battle between them."
