The Country Roads Community Health Centre is celebrating its 30th anniversary Wed., May 9 with an Anniversary/Vol- unteer Appreciation event at the Elgin Lions Hall. Tickets for the event are available through a search of 'Country Roads' at www.eventbrite.ca for a limited time. The event includes live music, a cash bar, a guest speaker and a buffet din- ner. There is no charge for the event. Volunteers have been at the heart of the centre's creation and continue to be an important part of the Country Roads team. The centre started 30 years ago after a group of volunteers created a cor- poration and obtained per- mission from the Ministry of Health, Community Health Program Branch to offer primary care. "Governments can cre- ate wonderful programs and governments can cre- ate policies that are fantas- tic. Especially in rural areas those great ideas don't bear fruit unless you have the volunteers to make those ideas come to life," said Executive Director Marty Crapper. The founding members of the corporation were Anna Greenhorn, Mary Sutcliffe, Margaret Stin- son, Sandra Chant, Ken- neth Burns, Arch Ostrom and Shirley Bryden. The centre provides more than just primary care services and works to meet needs in the commu- Ontario residents will be finding two sets of can- didates wanting their votes for the next six weeks as the provincial and munici- pal election campaign periods collide. The nomination period for municipal elections opened on Tuesday, May 1, four months later than the traditional January 1 opening date. Nominations for heads of council, councilors and school board trustees can be submitted until July 27 2 p.m. Election Day is Monday, October 22. Candidates who file their nomination papers early have the advantage of beginning to raise or spend money on a cam- paign, activities which are not allowed until the paper is submitted. Beginning this year some homework is required before submitting a nomination form. Municipal council can- didates in municipalities of over 4,000 residents must submit a declaration of endorsement form signed by 25 eligible elec- tors. Until candidates file a nomination paper, they cannot raise or spend any money on your campaign. The limit for campaign contributions to one candi- date has increased to $1,200 from $750 in the last election. Corporations and trade unions are not permitted to make contri- butions to candidates. Rideau Lakes Mayor Ron Holman is pleased the nomination period has been shortened up. "January 1 to election day was too long. I think our residents get tired of hearing about elections," said Holman who sees a hazard in election fatigue. "I'm hoping that not many declare until after the provincial election," said Holman, who is hop- ing municipal and provin- cial election signs won't be on the landscape at the same time. No candidates filed papers on day one although Councillor Rob Dunfield, who ran for mayor in 2014, has previ- ously said he was interest- ed in running again. The township's legal counsel confirmed to council that they had the jurisdiction to apply sanc- tions which go beyond the 90-day suspension of pay allowed in the Municipal Act. Council held a special meeting Tuesday night to discuss the issue in-cam- era after receiving the report from Integrity Com- missioner Nigel Bel- lechamber on April 6. Councillor Jackson was not available to attend the meeting on Tuesday night. Violations by Jackson found in the integrity com- missioner's report includ- ed failure of compliance with existing legislation, as well as violations relat- ing to staff which included interfering with staff in their duties, trying to direct their actions and maligning their reputa- tions. Council has restricted his contact with township staff with the use of the CAO as an intermediary. He is not permitted to email, text or phone staff.
