In honour of Satur- day's wedding of HRH Prince Henry of Wales and Ms Meghan Markle, the Royal Canadian Mint is releasing a silver col- lector coin designed by Westport artist Joel Kim- mel. The reverse design of this coin features an engraving of one of the official engagement pho- tos of the royal couple- to-be. This depiction is intricately edged with Canadian maple leaves intertwined with roses and escallop shells from Prince Henry's coat of arms. For added symbolism, three genuine Swarovs- ki® crystals edge the por- trait, recalling the design of the couple's three- stone diamond engage- ment ring. The effigy of Her Majesty Queen Eliza- beth, designed by Cana- dian artist Susannah Blunt, appears on the obverse. "The Mint has a proud history of celebrating royal milestones and crafting a silver collector coin to congratulate Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on their marriage is our latest expression of Canada's special attachment to the Royal family," said San- dra Hanington, President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint. It isn't Kimmel's first contribution to a Canadi- an Mint coin. His illus- tration of a 1914 era train crossing the Grand Trunk Bridge in Saskatoon graced a limited edition coin in 2014. Kimmel was on a short-list of pre-qualified Township of Rideau Lakes residents in the South Crosby ward will be making a choice when they vote for their repre- sentatives on township's council this fall. Incumbent Linda Carr added her name to the nomination list last week and Chaffey's Lock area resident Joan Delaney signed up on Monday. Councillor Claire Gun- newiek was the first can- didate to put in her nom- ination. "I feel I can make a difference in the town- ship, especially for waterfront dwellers," said Joan Delaney who serves as the president of the Chaffey's and Area Lake Association, a property owners group. "I've heard from a number of people that the taxes are very high for the people with water frontage and a lot of them don't feel they are getting value from their tax dollar," she said. Delaney, a retired ele- mentary teacher, has become involved in her community since her family's move from the Cornwall area where she served as a volunteer on several municipal com- mittees. Since her move to Rideau Lakes she has also provided leadership in the United Church, the Friends of the Library, the beautification com- mittee and the Chaffey's Lock Heritage Society. • • • The Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands still has just one nomination, Terry Fodey, a new candidate for Ward Rideau Lakes OPP are continuing an investiga- tion after a woman was rescued after driving into Upper Rideau Lake off the Forrester's Lane boat launch. She has since died. A firefighter who arrived at the scene and an OPP Emergency Response Team member succeeded in removing the woman from the vehicle and were able to commence CPR on her. The incident happened on Friday just before mid- night. The woman called in the emergency herself. Township of Rideau Lakes Fire Chief Steve Fournier said the woman was taken to the hospital in Perth before she was taken to Kingston to KGH. As of Monday, the 57 year old had been listed in critical condition.
