rv-pro.com June 2018 • RV PRO • 81 February, when people are thinking about what they are going to do in the coming summer. Then we began holding shows in other cities in late February and early March: Flint, Battle Creek, Port Huron and Traverse City. So, we built the brand, and the brand is MARVAC. And when people hear the TV and radio advertisements and see the newspaper ads promoting the show, we always brand it as the MARVAC Camper and RV show. We've been able to turn the MARVAC name into a huge response on our social media because we've branded these shows over the years. We also produce 100,000 copies of an RV and campground directory that is distributed at the 11 welcome centers throughout the state and all of our RV shows. It's got a listing of all of our camp- ground members in it, our dealer mem- bers, and our supplier members. If people are looking to get something repaired, it's got a listing of our repair centers. We even have an online copy. Along with marketing, there's also legis- lation. I'm a registered lobbyist for all three associations. When it comes time to take a bill up to the capital here in Lancing, I get the opportunity to do that on behalf of our members. RV PRO: Has MARVAC worked on any important initiatives recently? Sheffer: Sales tax on the difference was an important one. We were one of the last states to get the sales tax on the difference passed. This allows a consumer to pay sales tax only on the difference between their new RV and their trade-in. It's a big deal for consumers and the dealers. I think there are 37 states that have that now. We support the post-Labor Day school openings here in Michigan. We've always felt that schools should start after Labor Day. If you start school in August like in some other states, you cut out the best weeks of summer here in Michigan. It takes away from the opportunity for families to take their vacation when the weather is at its nicest.
