8 POTATO GROWER | JUNE 2018 New Products ESN Virtual Reality Videos ESN Smart Nitrogen is bringing the field tour to the grower in new virtual reality videos detailing the unique nitrogen needs and benefits of ESN on potatoes, corn, cotton and soybeans. The potato feature was filmed in Aberdeen, Idaho, at a University of Idaho research plot. It shows the effect of ESN on potatoes while discussing the crop's unique nitrogen needs. These videos were developed to provide an interactive extension to a field tour, allowing growers and retailers to see the performance of products up close from the palm of their hand. It also highlights a growing trend of virtual and augmented reality and its potential applications for agriculture. Learn more at www.smartnitrogen.com. Tong Caretaker Optical Sorting Upgrade Introduced to offer growers and processors automated optical sorting of dirty crop, Tong has been offering an integrated optical sorting option in its Caretaker mobile grader and static grading lines as an alternative to traditional manual inspection facilities. The optical sorter for dirty crop can also be specified as a stand-alone unit or within a complete intake grading line to replace manual removal of rocks and clods. Using the latest camera technology, the optical sorter scans all items in-flight to identify and separate crop from clods, rocks and other foreign objects. The machine offers effective separation for a wide range of potato varieties, including main, seed and processing crop. Contact Tong at www.tongengineering.com. Tomra ACT User Interface Tomra's user interface, Tomra ACT, is designed to make sorting adjustments simple and predictable for the operator. Each user can define his own sorting criteria. Tomra ACT is at the core of Tomra's latest generation of food sorters, the Tomra 5A and Tomra 5B. The user interface can also be installed as an upgrade in certain existing models. This means that once an operator is trained to use Tomra ACT, he or she can use any machine featuring the software. This new interface provides the sorter as a device for separating different qualities of products into separate streams and gives the operator immediate feedback on the behavior of the machine. Certain criteria of product quality are bundled and represented by simple blocks. The criteria blocks show relative real-time data about these criteria within the process.
