Deacon St. Louis was 71 years old and served as the Direc- tor of Deacon Formation for the Arch- diocese of Denver. Deacon Donald Edward St. Louis was born on Aug. 20, 1946 at St. Luke's Hospital in Denver to Edmond and Rose St. Louis. He was baptized at Holy Family Parish on Sept. 8, 1946 by Msgr. Greenslade. St. Louis attended Sts. Peter and Paul grade school in Wheatridge and Regis High School in Denver. Because his dad passed away when he was young, St. Louis worked at a grocery store to help pay for some of the expenses associated with being in a private school. As a high school student, he was active in foot- ball and volunteered at Ridge Home for people with mental disabilities. Desiring to explore the possibility of becoming a priest, St. Louis entered St. Thomas Seminary after graduating from Regis. However, after a few years of study, he decided to leave the seminary. He enrolled at Metropolitan State Col- lege, while assisting in the emergency room of St. Joseph's Hospital during his free time. After a short break from his studies, he received a bachelor's in Politi- cal Science at the University of Northern Colorado (UNC). It was while he was studying at UNC that he met his future wife, Connie. St. Louis and Connie were married at St. Jude's parish in Lakewood on Sept. 4, 1971. Deacon St. Louis would say that his marriage to Connie was the single great- est blessing in his life. Their marriage was blessed with three children and four grandchildren. In 1974, St. Louis and Connie became members of Spirit of Christ Catholic Church in Arvada. At the parish, St. Louis taught baptism prep and religious education and was a lector and an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. He was always interested in serving others, particu- larly the helpless and the disabled. In time, he heard God's call to the perma- nent diaconate and responded by enter- ing the formation program in 2000. Deacon St. Louis was ordained a deacon on June 12, 2004 by Archbishop Charles J. Chaput and was immediately assigned to Spirit of Christ Catholic Parish, where he remained through- out his ministry. He assisted with marriage counseling and annulments and helped with the elderly, the sick and the unemployed. In 2005, while continuing his parish responsibili- ties, Deacon St. Louis was assigned to the St. Francis School of Theology to assist with screening and evaluating men discerning the diaconate. He went on to become the Director of Deacon Formation in 2015. "Deacon Don had the character and disposition that matched perfectly with his role as the director of deacon forma- tion," stated Deacon Joseph Donohoe, Director of Deacon Personnel for the Archdiocese of Denver. "His unwaver- ing faith in God and his ardent desire for living out the Beatitudes was con- tagious for all the deacons of Denver. He was a gift to us from God." FILE PHOTO
