Brent S. Belzberg Chair, Board of Directors Sinai Health System Dr. Gary Newton President and CEO Sinai Health System A Message from Our Leaders At Sinai Health System our agenda of transformation focuses on patient impact. This means that we ask fundamental questions of ourselves. Have patient outcomes improved by a discovery that we've initiated? Have we improved the patient and caregiver experience? The stresses in our health-care system are well known, and our focus on patient experience and outcomes is the fundamental principle of how we, at Sinai Health, are working to address those pressures. This report highlights just a few of the extraordinary successes that we've had in the last year. We underwent our first system-wide Accreditation Canada review, just three short years since amalgamating. Judged against national quality and safety standards, we were awarded Exemplary Standing, putting us among the top ranks of Canadian hospitals. We celebrated the achievement while continuing to challenge ourselves to do better. We responded to needs in Ontario's health-care system. In partnership with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, we increased bed capacity in our Newton Glassman Charitable Foundation Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Mount Sinai and added surge beds at Bridgepoint. And we created new and exciting programs for our province and country. Our recently launched Ontario Fetal Centre, a Canadian first, will allow us to address health conditions of babies before birth, and our acclaimed programs at the Cyril & Dorothy, Joel & Jill Reitman Centre for Alzheimer's Support and Training are now available in communities across Ontario. With our partners, including Circle of Care, we have facilitated faster and safer discharges when patients leave our hospitals. Renew Sinai Phase 3A, our next phase of construction at Mount Sinai, began this year. This will allow us to treat even more patients in our surgical, medical, emergency and ambulatory areas. We have had renewal in our clinical leadership with new Chiefs in Medicine, Psychiatry, Ophthalmology and Emergency Medicine. We invested in new academic leadership roles in Palliative Care, Hospital Medicine, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and are reimagining our Christopher Sharp Cancer Centre. Our academic mandate and its global impact continue to flourish, with collaborations between researchers at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute that lead to discoveries and improved health outcomes. LTRI scientists are the top recipients of peer-reviewed funding per investigator in Canada. The recruitment of a star California-based scientist to a prestigious Canada 150 research chair in fetal development at the LTRI is a testament to our vibrant research environment. We are immensely grateful to everyone who helped us achieve excellence this year. Our community partners allow us to have impact across Ontario. Our clinicians relentlessly seek better ways to deliver care. Our researchers imagine the unimaginable. Our learners bring us fresh perspectives. All of our people make Sinai Health an extraordinary place to work. Our philanthropic community and Board of Directors energize and inspire us, and fuel our ambitions. We would like to acknowledge the meaningful contributions of Honey Sherman who brought insight, energy and passion to our Board, and who, tragically, we lost this year. We continue to mourn Honey and her husband Barry, and cherish their legacy. Most importantly, thank you to our patients and their families who drive everything we do and inspire us every day, providing thoughtful ideas about how to improve care. 3
