48 ISSUE 109 / 2018 INDIE The Fratellis are reunited with Tony Hoffer, producer of their ever-so-classic debut album, Costello Music and their sound is rejuvenated for their fifth album, In Your Own Sweet Time. LA siblings Este, Danielle and Alana Haim bring their insanely catchy blend of r&b and classic soft rock to the Alexandra Palace on the 15th and 16th of June, as part of the UK and Europe stretch of their 'Sister Sister Sister' tour. In Your Own Sweet Time marks a development into an electrifyingly chameleonic new phase, tangled with a bigger, bolder sound yet still characterised with the band's sense of humour. Whilst showcasing smart lyrical skills and polished rhythms, their matured sound still obtains a youthful innocence injected with harmless lust. The Glaswegian trio haven't lost their mischievous charm and have produced an album that is going to be a hit with fans. With an ambitious blend of Prince influences and a cascade of addictive riffs, The Fratellis have produced a gimmick-free album with beautiful imagery precariously piled on top. The LP shows how playful the band can be but once the surface is penetrated, In Your Own Sweet Time also shows off the ambitious side of the group with clever lyricism. Boasting all the energy of American pop combined with the testosterone-fuelled flair of the best in British rock, In Your Own Sweet Time is a shot of pure pleasure. A trio that famously performed their first gig at a Hollywood kosher deli, Haim rose to prominence with an exceptional string of polished and proficiently crafted singles in 2012 and 2013 before dropping their number one debut album Days Are Gone. Their 2017 sophomore effort Something to Tell You and its irresistible lead single 'Want You Back showed that the band's acute pop instincts are still in fine form. Those addicted to Haim's slickly produced studio work should prepare to hear a rawer, more rock- oriented sound from the live band, who are also known to have a fair few cover songs up their sleeves whenever they go on tour. GUESTLIST RECOMMENDS: THE FRATELLIS EVENT PREVIEW: HAIM ARTIST OF THE MONTH: MOUNT ERIE In July 2016, Canadian musician Geneviève Castrée died from pancreatic cancer, survived by her daughter and her husband Phil Elverum. In the months that fol- lowed, Elverum set about documenting his grief in a series of sparse, lo-fi record- ings under the name Mount Eerie. The resulting album was A Crow Looked at Me, a stark, emotionally crushing vision of death that sought to drain this oft-romanticised subject of all poetry and whimsy. Less than a year later, Elverum continues in this challenging vein with an album that moves beyond the initial shock of Castrée's passing to capture the complex feelings that emerge as Elverum returns to the wider world and figures out where to go from here. On the 10-minute 'Distortion', Elverum delves into his past, from his first time seeing a dead body at his great- grandfather's funeral to a brief pregnancy scare with a former lover back in 2001 that caused him to momentarily reassess his place in the world. But whether Elverum is singing about old relationships, or having breakfast with his daughter, it all unfailingly comes back to his late wife. There is a central conflict in Now Only between the feeling of finding Castrée everywhere ( i.e. his dreams) and the belief that she is actually nowhere. It's a deeply personal conundrum, yet its relevance is of cosmic proportions. Naturally, Now Only doesn't offer any easy answers but to share in Elverum's day-to-day life, as he wrestles with the big questions is an experience that's as warmly reassuring as it is heartbreaking.
