HOUSE / TECHNO 31 7 www.guestlist.net Issue 46 / 2012 SCANDALISM WEEKENDER @ XOYO GUESTLIST RECOMMENDS URULU An great event with a spectacular line up graced London last month and the Guestlist Network was lucky enough to attend. Last weekend saw some amazing DJs and producers take to the decks at XOYO as part of their Scandalism Weekender event. The place was fucking oozing with electronic royalty. I almost overdosed on nu-disco alone. ( As if thats even a thing. Underdoses were rampant.) Jacques Lu Cont and Alan Braxe headed up night one downstairs at the fabulous Old Street venue and, while things were a little hazy by the time JLC took to the stage, it was a sick night. Alan Braxe dropping numerous gems from The Upper Cuts, including the glorious Music Sounds Better With You, was definitely a highlight (as was hearing Midnight Juggernauts Road to Recovery, although Im not sure who played it. 80 per cent sure it happened though.) Those who were able to get their shit together and make it down for night two were rewarded with Yuksek and The Magician as smooth as ever. Yukseks set was banging and The Magician closing with Totos Africa was a lovely touch for those who had grinded out both evenings. Good to see both stylish gents in the same place, following some magnificent DJ sets over the Summer performing as Peter & The Magician. I almost snagged The Magicians wand when some girl dropped it too. Was all ready to take a huge grab but an undesirable throw and a lack of being able to see were my downfalls. Next time. www.twitter.com /scott_carbines www.scottmylc.tumblr.com ALBUM OF THE MONTH: RELEASE YOURSELF 12 Admirer of cultural electronic music, Los Angeles-based instrumentalist Urulu, is known for fusing originally inner-city beats with worldly sounds. Hailing out of the US, Urulu, real name Taylor Freels, sets himself apart from the mainstream Stateside electronic scene. He is just one example of a possible resurgence of chilled, down tempo house music in North America, a scene that seems a lot more prevalent in Europe at this moment in time. His sound is reminiscent of the Chicago house grooves and basslines, which adds a great deal of depth and soul to the music, and highlights that music does not have to be over 140 BPM to get people dancing. The free release of the Tell Me/No More EP a couple of months ago is a prime example of this, as both songs have an organic quality to them which oscillate on a beat, jointly clocking in at over six minutes apiece. They hark back to the classic house sound, which has been somewhat lost in a demolition of big bass music. He has three further releases, all EPs. The Goodbyes EP from 2011 showcases a more modern deep house sound, the piano stabs being subterranean and cloudy rather than bright and buoyant as is usually associated with classic house. This was succeeded by Sincerely 91 EP (which contains the classy house track Another Time) and Across the Sky EP, both of which were released this year, proving that it has been a stellar few months for Urulu, and surely will only get better come 2013. Urulus music traverses both the urban, with chopped and sampled vocals, and the suburban, with space and vitality, and I think this is the key to successful house music. He is playing the Heads & Hands Boxing Day Party at Cargo this year, which will surely provide some laid back beats to help with the digestion of Christmas dinner. TOUR SCHEDULE : DISCLOSURE So with the rapid rise to fame that brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence have experienced in the last year, they are now all set and ready to showcase their producing talents in their first official UK tour. Top global house-name Robert Sanchez, releases every year a compilation with his favorite tracks of the year in the Release Yourself compilation. The album includes a total of 28 tracks -23 of them exclusive- which belong to all kind of house vibes. This time, his style, as he says: has definitely returned to a more jackin & latin influenced house sound, as well as getting into the deeper vibes.
