DRUM N BASS / DUBSTEP 43 7 www.guestlist.net Issue 46 / 2012 SUB FOCUS TIDAL WAVE ARTIST OF THE MONTH: VILLEM There is a track that deserves your attention. The outstanding and catchy collaboration between Sub Focus and Alpines is considered one of the drum n bass hits of the year. DJ and drum n bass producer Nick Douwma aka Sub Focus, is affiliated with Ram Records. After his debut album two years ago, he raised quickly becoming a bigwig in the dnb scene. Thats probably because he started producing music on his computer at the age of 13, which shows an inner talent and intuition that has always accompanied him and that predictably cough the eye of Andy C, who got him into Ram Records. London born Sub Focus, had a really productive 2012 and also has interesting upcoming projects as he will be headlining the BBC Radio 1 Dance tent at Reading Festival & Leeds Festival 2013. His music is a futuristic fusion of house, dubstep, dnb and electro, which this new track shows. The digital bundle includes remixes from Chuckie, KillSonik, Flosstradamus and Shadow Child. His productions, made in the mountains of France, or in the heart of the Utopia Music studio in Bristol, and characterized by a nostalgic feeling, have been featured on Radio 1 and 1Xtra. Med School has a new junior surgeon in its ranks and he is causing quite a stir. A young talent originally from Ipswich, Villem, aka Andrew Wilson, is now based in Bristol. His sound combines a piano composition background and with deeper soul vibes, reaching out to the slightly darker end of the drum and bass spectrum. Villems debut release on the Med School label is the EP Shimmer, a six track collective featuring collaborations with his brother Fields, alongside Mako. The vibes are slightly trippy beats with progressive drums and soft hints of vocals. Azura is a particular highlight; smooth, languid and super chilled. Alongside Medic30, he also features on a compilation by Symettry with Ascent. This combines both Mako and Fields and is a harsher, funkier sound with plenty of bass to go round. Hype, London Elektricity and Bailey, amongst others are already predicting big things for this producer, check him out for yourself!
