INDIE / ROCK 46 www.guestlist.net Issue 46 / 2012 GUESTLIST RECOMMENDS A PLACE TO BURY STRANGERS The New York-based noise rock band, formed in 2001, plays an atmospheric mix of psychedelic rock, shoegaze and space rock. It has taken a while, but it appears A Place To Bury Strangers are finally getting the recognition they deserve. They recently released their second album Worship in June this year. A Place To Bury Strangers, released in 2007, was an amalgamation of recordings from the period of 2004 through to 2006, and provided the heaviest and most distorted noise since The Jesus and Mary Chain. Their latest album has brought with it a new line-up, as their former bassist Jonathan Smith was replaced by Dion Lunadon, and drummer Jay Space replaced in February of this year by Robi Gonzalez. Their style has changed subtlety over the years; the most noteworthy aspect is probably a lessening of the DIY sound, and a greater expanse in ALBUM OF THE MONTH HALCYON styles (see And Im Ups gritty surf guitar line.) Anyone who has managed to catch them live will understand their appeal. They are impossibly loud, and backed with strobe lights and smoke it makes a truly unique experience. Their music sounds better the louder it is, as the depth of sound manages to permeate the distortion. So turn it up! TOUR SCHEDULE : RECOMMENDED SONGS: She Dies I Lived My Life to Stand Mind Control PATRICK WOLF Ellie Goulding spreads her wings with second album Halcyon as she makes mature departure from 2010s Lights. When Ellie Goulding won the 2010 Critics Choice Award, she was pinned as an electro flower child, cut from the same sequined cloth as fellow British divas Little Boots, Marina and the Diamonds and La Roux. Now in 2012, Goulding releases Halcyon a somewhat fitting title for Ellies birdsong style which sees her metamorphose into a cutting electropop aficionado wailing, rasping and cooing her way through tribal beats, techno loops and ethereal harps. Although she has not lost her aptitude for saccharine pop ballads (in 2010 Your Song had us crying into our stockings over the price of a John Lewis rocking horse ); tracks like Joy and I Know You Care are nice, but ultimately lack lustre, and take a backseat to more impressive and technically satisfying songs like Figure 8 and Explosions, sprinkled with twinkling harps and a Florence-esque presence. Active Childs Hanging On is given a slick make-over in a duet that is somewhat ruined by Tinie Tempahs nonsensical rap, advising the use of Gaviscon to cure heartbreak. In retrospect, Lights seems a tame affair- light, poppy songs that were all air and not much credence. Now Goulding sings with all the emotive conviction of Adele. Halcyon paints with strokes from electro and pop palettes, creating dreampop pictures and doomed soundscapes. 24th January 4th February 8th February 17th February AVEIRO (Portugal) Teatro Aveirense OXFORD (UK) St. John Evangelist EDINBURGH (UK) Pleasance Theatre STOCKHOLM (Sweden) So dra Teatern 25th January 6th February 9th February 18th February VILA NOVA DE FAMALICAO (Portugal) Casa das Artes NORWICH (UK) Norwich Arts Centre WOLVERHAMPTON (UK) Wulfrun Hall 27th January 7th February 13th February OSLO KULTURKIRKEN (Norway) NOK 220 LIVERPOOL (UK) Epstein Theatre SOUTHAMPTON (UK) Turner Sims BARCELONA (Spain) Apolo
