INDIE / ROCK 48 www.guestlist.net EVENT PREVIEW ENTER SHIKARI / CANCER BATS / ENGINE-EARZ EXPERIMENT @ CAMDEN ROUNDHOUSE Issue 46 / 2012 ARTIST OF THE MONTH: ANDY BURROWS Its shaping up to be a triple threat on the bill at Camdens Roundhouse on December 16th. And its going to get noisy. After an exhausting summer packed full of festivals and international dates, Enter Shikari are set to play a series of Christmas shows to round off the year. Supported by the crushingly heavy Cancer Bats and Brighton based live dubstep act, Engine-Earz Experiment, its going to be one hell of a show. Over the course of previous tours, Enter Shikari have been tearing up venues across the UK, though this time theyre eschewing larger venues in favour of sweaty, intimate gigs. Singer Rou Reynolds explains when you factor in the basic facts ... it starts to feel like quite a cost just to be able to limply say we played Wembley, so we made the choice of actually going smaller for this tour. Smaller on venue but not on sound. Grab your tickets now: www.roundhouse.org.uk Were you asked to describe Andy Burrows to someone, you would immediately hear the words He was the drummer in Razorlight blurt out of your mouth. And technically you would be correct. But hes grown into so much more since the split three years ago, so much so that even to preface a profile by referring to him as Razorlights ex-drummer feels cheap and lazy. Hes since fronted I Am Arrows, released material in a collaboration with Editors Tom Smith and now is releasing his first solo album. Entitled Company, it displays a different side to Burrows, comprised chiefly of acoustic driven, folk-tinged songs. Its a more downbeat and introspective experience than previous projects. The opening track Company is a good example of this new direction. Displaying a dreamy and, at points, dramatic feel, the songs melancholic subject matter is elevated to something more powerful than the sum of its parts. One of the stand out tracks, Keep Moving On, released as a single way back in May of this year, bridges the gap between old and new works. With a thumping rhythm and even a somewhat incongruous guitar solo, its reminiscent of early Richard Ashcroft with a sweeping, almost orchestral quality to it. This melodramatic style of production is a double edged sword, subtly embroidering some tracks while obscuring Burrows voice on others. This is a real shame, as during a recent live performance of the album it becomes resolutely clear that these elements are unnecessary. Burrows voice is the star of the record; clear and powerful but not without character, it needs no embellishment.
