Executive Summary Results with Sage Intacct: • Saved $75,000 annually by consolidating branch accounting at headquarters • Increased finance team efficiency by 75% • Sped report preparation by 20% and easily met monthly close deadlines • Achieved clean audit, while saving 20 hours and reducing compliance risk Challenges Seeking Standardization to Mitigate Nonprofit Complexity Since the Civil War, the Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) has worked to strengthen the resilience of the young men and women of the United States' armed services and their families. With more than 250,000 participants at 200 service centers in 18 states, the organization brings in funding from program revenues, grants, and donations at both the local and national levels in order to provide youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility services. Previously, the nonprofit's day-to-day financial operations were managed by local accountants spread across the country in 13 branch offices. When Don Kandel joined the headquarters as CFO, he found that local accountants each had varying degrees of experience, and were struggling with antiquated, complex accounting so ware. "Our legacy on-premises system didn't give us confidence that the information coming out of it was reliable for managing the organization," he remembers. "Since each branch used a separate instance with its own program codes, extracting information was extremely cumbersome and it was difficult to understand where the numbers were coming from." He went in search of a more modern, user-friendly solution that even nonfinancial people could understand, and selected Sage Intacct. A er upgrading to the cloud-based financial management so ware, ASYMCA gained trusted visibility for more timely, informed decision-making, while easing the administrative burden for branch offices by centralizing accounting tasks–ultimately saving $75,000 a year. Solutions Simplified Multi-Entity Accounting Increases Efficiency 75% Kandel and his controller, Stephen Brown, worked closely with Sage partner, SSi Consulting, throughout the implementation process. "The whole team from SSi was very hands on, thorough, and responsive," noted Brown. "They helped us restructure our chart of accounts and maintain our clear purchasing policies to bring consistency across all the branches. In addition, they provided a roadmap for our implementation, built custom reports, and led user training to ensure our distributed staff got up to speed quickly." With these improvements, ASYMCA's individual locations no longer need to hire their own bookkeepers to keep financial records, which eliminated $20,000 in external annual salary costs for each branch.
