Figuring it out Figure 1. Average increase in sugarbeet yields for foliar hormone/nutrient trials in south- ern Idaho for 2005–2009. Yield is separated into “sugar” and “other” components (sum is total tonnage). The Sugar Mover & Ripener treatment was significantly greater than Ripener alone, which was significantly greater than Sugar Mover alone and all other treat- ments (TRTS), as well as the baseline untreated control. yields even further. Applying this product as a foliar spray over the top of sugarbeet seedlings at the 1-4 leaf stage (2 quart per acre with her- bicide) followed by Ripener (2 quart per acre) significantly increased total sugar- beet yield in 2 of 3 field observations. More importantly, sugar yield signifi- cantly increased in all three of the years this combination was tested. The average total yield increase was 2,710 pounds per acre (Figure 1); with a range of 715 to 4,464 pounds per acre. The average sugar yield increase was 800 pounds per acre (Figure 1); with a range of 588 to 934 pounds per acre. It is important to note, however, that Sugar Mover applied alone did not in- crease total or sugar yield in most of the trials in which it was evaluated. Figure 2. Average sugarbeet sugar concentration for foliar hormone/nutrient trials in southern Idaho for 2005–2009. The Sugar Mover & Ripener treatment was the only treat- ment significantly greater than the untreated control. Sugar Concentration Although Ripener had an average of 0.2 percent higher sugar concentration than the untreated controls in these studies, this difference was not statistically significant (Figure 2). However, applying Sugar Mover prior to Ripener resulted in 0.5 percent higher sugar concentration than the control; with significant increases in all three studies conducted with this combination. 24 Sugar Producer June/July 2010
