AT the end of 2019, my application to join the SEI Women's Network board of directors was approved, and I became the first male to serve on the board. Why did I choose to apply to the board? Before I answer that question, let me back up and tell you a bit more about the women who shaped me professionally over the course of many years and how each contributed to the professional and the man that I am today. Back in 1987, I had a unique opportunity to become the first and only male telephone operator in the 100+ year history of Warwick Valley Telephone Company. I joined an outstanding team of 22 women with telephone company tenures ranging from a few months to 35+ years. I suppose it's possible that some men wouldn't have been comfortable in this role— but not me. I garnered unbelievable professional and personal treasures getting to know these women. I saw how they supported each other, challenged each other, helped customers and balanced work and family lives. Each one contributed to me in different ways. I saw how they supported each other, challenged each other, helped customers and balanced work and family lives. Let me tell you, when you are one of three operators taking calls between 10 and 11 p.m. on a Tuesday, the most interesting conversations happen. Overall, these women gave me incredible insights on client service and professionalism that helped shape my attitude in servicing clients for decades beyond that short time as an operator.
