COURSE MARKER SCORE’s Polaris RZR PRO XP Used To Mark Race Courses Gets Upgraded By SCORE Journal Staff  Most racers and fans are anxious to find out when the next race’s course map is available. The long mileage, marking, and scouting the Baja desert takes its toll on SCORE President and Race Director Jose A. Grijalva and the course marking staff. The long process and many miles are aided with the help of Polaris, the Official UTV of SCORE International who provides the team with a capable vehicle that has already proven to withstand the tough Baja terrain. SCORE’s 2021 Polaris RZR Pro XP has already seen some hard miles, but it’s still in excellent condition and will be used to mark the 2022 BFGoodrich Tires 54th SCORE Baja 500 Presented by 4 Wheel Parts racecourse this year. While the vehicle is very capable, SCORE wanted to make some upgrades to the UTV that included a set of King Shocks’ Polaris RXR performance kit, which are factory replacement units for this particular model of Polaris. The shocks feature adjustable ride height and external reservoirs that help increase wheel travel and allow for more articulation. They have also been proven to handle all of Baja’s tough terrain and bolt right into the factory locations without any modifications. In addition to a new set of King Shocks, the SCORE team added a set of BFGoodrich Baja T/A KR2 tires measuring 32x9.5x15. As the Official Tire SCORE International Off-Road Racing BFGoodrich tires are very capable of handling the rugged terrain and have a history of being the winningest tire in Baja. Featuring the company’s race-proven CoreGuard™ technology, the tires are specifically designed to handle the specific demands of modern UTVs. Completing the package is a set of 15-inch diameter, Raceline Podium Beadlock wheel. As the Official Wheel of SCORE International, Raceline has many UTV, Class 1, and SCORE Trophy Truck racers utilizing their wheels for their strength and reliability to withstand the pounding that the Baja terrain can deliver. Wanting a little more power out of the Polaris, the SCORE team decided to upgrade the factory muffler with a new Trinity RZR Pro XP exhaust system. The exhaust is made from 304 brushes stainless steel and comes with mid and head pipes and features dual aluminum mufflers with 6061 billet machined exhaust tips. The system fits in the factory location and offers a deeper exhaust note. Watch this video on how it’s installed: With safety being the number one concern for SCORE racers, staff and fans, it was important for the team to upgrade the seats and harnesses on the UTV to race-level standards. A set of Mastercraft Safety S2/4 seats and Impact Racing Pro Series Camlock restraints were used for both the front and rear passengers. The seats feature deeper side bolsters, more padding, and can be easily removed for cleaning. The 2-inch wide restraints securely hold everyone in place and feature the latest in seat technology and a cam-lock latching system that properly holds passengers in place and decreases any chance of injuries should any emergency situation arise. When out in the Baja desert with two or four people in the UTV, communication is vital not only between occupants, but also to relay information back to other team members waiting back in Ensenada or any other location. PCI Race Radios provided our course mapping team with some of their latest radio systems that fit right into the center console of the Polaris. Mapping any course in Baja also requires a good GPS, so Lowrance provided the team with its HDS12 high-definition navigation unit with a multi-touch screen. More racers use Lowrance GPS systems because of their easy-to-use display and live on-screen mapping capabilities and plotting features that can be mapped in real-time. While this Polaris RZR still has many miles left in it, the upgrades made by the SCORE team simply make course-plotting a bit safer, more capable, and more comfortable over the long haul.
