Mail Bag FACILITY OPERATORS? CONFERENCE The United States Indoor Soccer Association thanks those who sent their complements after the Facility Operatorsʼ Conference, held September 13-15 at Family First Sports Park in Erie, PA. For a full report and feedback from attendees, please visit USIndoorʼs online "Facilities" page at USIndoor.com. Dear USIndoor, I was looking at the companies that were at your Conference, and they all seem to be from the Northern US and Canada. I live in Kentucky and would love to know if there are any other Conferences like this that are closer to the South. I am an anxious newcomer to opening an indoor complex. Jason, KY Dear Jason, Last year the Conference was in Grand Rapids, MI. This yearʼs was the second annual. Site selection is determined according to a bid/application process. Ideally, we would move the Conference each year where there is the most interest or to where we have not been before. As to exhibitors, they came from all over, including from such places as Kentucky, California, Washington, Texas, South Dakota, and North Carolina. Including facility owners and startups, 29 states were represented. We hope you will be able to attend next yearʼs event. In the meantime, if we can support you in your project, please do call on us. ABOUT USINDOOR What are the affiliation costs for an indoor soccer facility to join USIndoor? Are there any individual player fees other than insurance? Are there any other costs involved? What is your affiliation with the USSF? Charles, NY Dear Charles, The cost of a facility membership is $50. There are no player fees and no insurance fees, unless purchased separately. LA Dear Kevin, USIndoor does not operate a league but is a support organization to leagues, indoor soccer facilities and others connected with the industry. We believe MISL games are televised on a limited basis on different channels, depending on each team. For more information, we suggest you contact the MISL or its teams directly. For starters, you may click any of the related links from USIndoorʼs online "Links" page. RULES & REFEREES Hello, I am interested in becoming a ref at our local arenas. Most require USIndoor certification. Can you tell me when the next clinic will be in the San Diego area? Deirdre, San Diego, CA Dear Deirdre, Please check USIndoorʼs online Calendar or Referees page. If you donʼt find the information you need, please contact me directly at ref@usindoor.com with your telephone number. Could you please send me the age requirements and where and when the certifications take place? I have a 13.5 yr old who has played soccer for 7 years and indoor for 5 yrs. She would like to ref this year if possible. Maureen, Concord, NH Dear Ms. Maureen, We would be pleased to include your daughter in instruction. Is there a facility in your area willing to host the clinic? Perhaps you could approach one to inquire. Thank you. I am a 13 year old who currently has a Grade 8 referee badge and have been doing outdoor games. Is it necessary to have additional training to ref indoor games? Dylan, Vancouver, WA Dear Dylan, Specialized instruction for indoor soccer referees is essential and should be mandatory. Due to the many differences between indoor and outdoor soccer — for example, in the rules, speed and style of play — outdoor instruction will not suffice. STARTUPS Dear USIndoor: I am looking at running an indoor youth soccer league in my gymnasium next year. I was wondering if you could give me with any tips on how to get started.
