WOONSOCKET – The city's
non-profit groups will be taxed
on their real estate for the first
time beginning with the July
2014 billing cycle, thanks to the
findings of an audit ordered last
year by the City Council.
The first 13, which will owe
a combined $382,040, were
notified by letter on Nov. 25
and more groups may soon be
added to the list, say city officials.
New taxpayers include organizations such as Seven Hills
Rhode Island, which will be
billed more than $100,000 in
2014 under the plan. Others
who will be sent new tax bills
this year include YWCA Rhode
Island, on the hook for around
$30,000; Le Club Par X, which
must pay around $8,700 and St.
Joseph's Veterans Association,
which will be charged more
than $17,000.

Woonsocket's new mayor is
not alone in her mission to
restore fiscal stability in a city
that's flirted with bankruptcy
for the past two years, at least
if the army of state officials
who surround and support her
is any indication.
Vowing to "turn the
city around" and bring
Woonsocket back to solvency,
Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt was
sworn in Tuesday night among
a crowd of government officials and elated fans at the
