ACC Room 15 | Interview Turnaround Arts, a pilot program of the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, is demonstrating how arts education can have a dramatic impact in the country's lowest-performing schools. In this session, the Vice-Chair of the Committee will interview the principal of a Turnaround Arts school—once the lowest-performing school in the state of Louisiana and now showing inspiring gains—about the arts' im- pact on often-ignored elements of reform: climate, morale and student engagement. Mary Schmidt Campbell, President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, Rachel Goslins, President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, Ron Gubitz, ReNEW Schools #PCAH 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM GAMING & VIRTUAL LEARNING EdTech for Adults: Huge Need, Great Opportunity ACC Room 17B | Panel Discussion There is great potential for adaptive learning and other education technologies to improve learning and employment for the 30+ million U.S. adults lacking the foun- dational skills to get a good job or succeed in college. Yet, the promise is unexploited: the adult segment of the EdTech market is undeveloped, underinvested, and little understood. This session will introduce the challenge, highlight some responses, and identify further opportunities. Learn about an important field too much ignored. Alex Chisholm, Skylab Learning, Bror Saxberg, Kaplan Inc, Matthew Muench, The Joyce Foundation #adultlearn 12:00 PM - 12:15 PM GAMING & VIRTUAL LEARNING Encouraging Ethical and Critical Thinking with Play Hilton Salon C | Future15: Gaming How can a game encourage children to recognize ethical issues and develop higher- order skills that enable them to deal with challenging situations in their own lives? Quandary , judged Game of the Year at the Games for Change Festival, challenges players to shape the future of a space colony facing difficult dilemmas. Learn about the game, and how developers, educators, children and child development experts teamed-up to make it, and how teachers are creatively implementing in the classroom. Peter Stidwill, Learning Games Network #quandary 12:00 PM - 12:30 PM GAMING & VIRTUAL LEARNING Games, Critical Thinking and Assessment ACC Ballroom EF | Playground Talk Learning games with embedded assessments can engage students by prompting problem-solving and critical thinking while transforming the way a teacher instructs students. Real-time assessment in games can help teachers understand the decision- making process, identify acquired skills, and spot problem areas. Join us to hear the perspectives of both a game developer and a classroom teacher as we explore these topics through The Sports Network-2, developed by Classroom, Inc. and available on GameUp. Celia Alicata, Classroom Inc, David Conover, PISD #gblSXSW 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM CIVIC ENGAGEMENT & PHILANTHROPY How Student Voice Can Change Education Hilton Salon F | Problem Solver The Quaglia Institute for Student Aspirations identifies that only 44 percent of stu- dents believe they have a voice in decision making—this dips to as low as 34 percent in 12th grade. In the same research, students explain their lack of belief that school is preparing them well for their future. A correlation with higher dropout rates later in high school can be seen in conjunction with research done by Kids Count. Join to discuss how we can strengthen student voices to positively change this. Zak Malamed, Student Voice #StuVoice 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM ACCESSIBILITY & SPECIAL EDUCATION Individualization for Children with Special Needs Hilton Salon A | Core Conversation Special education programs face huge pressure: more students with autism and other disorders, increased demand for Response-to-Intervention (RtI), and fewer trained pro- fessionals to serve these students—all while doing more with less. Online technology alleviates this pressure and delivers truly individualized and accessible education for students with special needs. Find out how technology is transforming special educa- tion and how you can understand and effectively advocate in this new world. Clay Whitehead, PresenceLearning #speced 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM DIY, MAKER & HACKER Making and Learning: Put Your Hands Together! We'll also hear from leaders in education and me- dia to explore how combining strong leadership and teaching with technology is creat- ing more opportunities to make learning dynamic. Prepare to be inspired. Professionals have developed learning styles to address this problem resulting in "flipped" classrooms, peer instruction and hands-on learn- ing. However, outcomes these methods aim to produce—critical thinking, problem solving, entrepreneurship and creativity—are already available with Montessori. James Moudry, The Post Oak School, Laura Shaw, Oak Knoll Kinderhaus, Maura Joyce, Montessori in Redlands, Steven Hughes #disruptedu 12:00 PM - 1:00 PM BEST PRACTICES & IMPLEMENTATION SAMR SLAMR: Maximizing Learning Potential in Apps Hilton Room 400/402 | Panel Discussion Beware! After the "Slam", the audience will actively work together to give lessons a "punch" applying their new skill of elevating app integration to new heights.
