4 MOUNT SINAI HOSPITAL FOUNDATION REPORT TO OUR COMMUNITY 2013 /14 5 MOUNT SINAI HOSPITAL FOUNDATION REPORT TO OUR COMMUNITY 2013 /14 INNOVATION & ADVANCES INNOVATION & ADVANCES INNOVATION & ADVANCES Nature magazine, one of the world's leading scientific journals, published the findings of an international research team that included Dr. Kathy Siminovitch, Senior Investigator at Mount Sinai's Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute. The research team discovered over 40 new pieces of genetic information associated with rheumatoid arthritis, opening the door to a future that includes a personalized approach to treating the autoimmune disorder where medications will target a person's individual genetic make-up. Dr. Irene Andrulis is the Anne and Max Tanenbaum Chair in Molecular Medicine. Dr. Eleftherios Diamandis is the Hold'em for Life Chair in Prostate Cancer Biomarkers. Dr. Joel Sadavoy is the Sam and Judy Pencer and Family Chair in Applied General Psychiatry. Dr. Kathy Siminovitch is the Sherman Family Research Chair in Genomic Medicine. Dr. Bernard Zinman C.M. is the Sam and Judy Pencer and Family Chair in Diabetes Research. A study published in the respected Annals of Internal Medicine clearly demonstrates an increased risk of death for obese patients even when their metabolic readings, including cholesterol, blood glucose and blood pressure, are in the normal range. Led by top diabetes researchers, Drs. Bernard Zinman, C.M. and Ravi Retnakaran, who are also clinicians in Mount Sinai's Leadership Sinai Centre for Diabetes, and Dr. Caroline Kramer, a post-doctoral fellow at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, the study further solidifies our #1 international ranking in the field of diabetes research. The discovery of a key biomarker that can pinpoint the cause of male infertility without the need for invasive surgery could dramatically impact patient care. This finding has the potential to improve the process of diagnosing infertility, a condition that affects up to 500,000 men in Canada. This important study, published in the leading international journal, Science Translational Medicine, was led by Dr. Keith Jarvi, Director of the Murray Koffler Urologic Wellness Centre, and Dr. Andrei Drabovich, a researcher in Dr. Eleftherios Diamandis' lab at the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute. In Research & Patient Care Rheumatoid Arthritis : A new finding by Mount Sinai researchers has the potential to slow the progression of kidney disease, one of the most serious complications for patients with diabetes. The team, led by Dr. George Fantus, discovered that a previously known protein can potentially be targeted with drugs in early stages of kidney disease to prevent end-stage kidney failure, a condition for which there is no effective drug treatment. Kidney Disease : A new international study led by Dr. Alexandre Zlotta, Director of Uro-Oncology at the Murray Koffler Urologic Wellness Centre, found that close to 50 per cent of men over age 60 who died from other causes also showed evidence of prostate cancer. The study proved that more men die with prostate cancer rather than from it, and makes the case for improved screening methods that can detect cancers based on the level of aggressiveness, thereby avoiding unnecessary treatment for low-risk cancers. Prostate Cancer : The Cyril & Dorothy, Joel & Jill Reitman Centre for Alzheimer's Support and Training launched the Reitman Centre Working CARERS program – a unique initiative to provide new workplace support for individuals who are caring for loved ones with dementia. This effort is led by Dr. Joel Sadavoy, one of Canada's leading authorities in geriatric mental health, and supported by government and private sector partners. This program is another example of how the Reitman Centre continues to break new ground in this important and growing clinical area. Dementia Support : Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women in Canada and the LEGACY Girls Study at Mount Sinai is helping shape our future knowledge and treatment of the disease. Led by Drs. Irene Andrulis and Julia Knight, Senior Investigators at the Lunenfeld- Tanenbaum Research Institute, this unique study involves over 900 adolescent girls from across North America, half of whom have a family history of breast cancer and half of whom do not. The study aims to understand the relationship between genetics and environmental factors in the development of breast cancer. Breast Cancer : The Rogers Hixon Ontario Human Milk Bank located in Mount Sinai Hospital is Ontario's only human milk bank. Marking its first anniversary this year, the milk bank has collected, pasteurized and distributed more than 30,000 ounces of human donor milk to over 500 of the most vulnerable babies in 14 hospitals across the province, giving them the best chance for a healthy start. Neonatal Care : More than one million Canadians live with Type 2 diabetes, and two million are at risk. This year, Dr. Ravi Retnakaran of Mount Sinai's Leadership Sinai Centre for Diabetes and Associate Member of the Lunenfeld-Tanenbaum Research Institute, launched a study to discover how intensive, short-term insulin treatment slows or halts the progress of Type 2 diabetes. Called RESET-IT, this work offers the potential to change the future of diabetes treatment and improve outcomes for individuals with Type 2 diabetes or those at risk of the disease. Type 2 Diabetes : This year, Toronto Life magazine featured a cover story entitled, "The City's Best Doctors." Mount Sinai was very proud that of the 30 high-profile physicians chosen by their peers, 10 were from our Hospital. This underscores Mount Sinai's continued sector leadership, fuelled by the incredible talent within our physician community.
