At the first Rose Bowl . . . • The playing field was 110 yards long. • Touchdowns and field goals counted five points and conversions one point. • The game was divided into two 35-minute halves, not quarters. • A team had to make five yards in three downs for a first down. • Forward passes were not allowed. — Courtesy U-M Sports Information The 1887 edition of the University of Michigan football team posted a perfect 3-0 record, includ- ing a win by the score of 8-0 in the first-ever meeting between U-M and Notre Dame.
