A landmark $15 million gift from Gerald Schwartz and Heather Reisman
will propel Mount Sinai's Emergency Department (ED) to even greater heights. This
historic gift will double the size of the Hospital's current ED to accommodate the
expected growth of emergency patients from 56,000 to an estimated 80,000 patients
over the next few years. It will be anchored in patient and family-centred design,
with an emphasis on infection control, patient flow and leading-edge technology.
This transformational gift will also allow for the creation of the Schwartz/Reisman
Emergency Medicine Institute, a first-of-its-kind innovative think tank that will further
propel research, education and policy development in emergency medicine.
This gift follows previous gifts from the Schwartz/Reisman family, bringing their total
investment in emergency care at Mount Sinai to an incredible $28 million.

Emergency Care
for Older Adults
As a leader in geriatric
emergency care, Mount Sinai
physician, Dr. Don Melady,
has developed Geri-EM.com,
an e-learning website for
emergency physicians seeking
tools to provide optimal care
for older patients. The web
program, which is accredited
by the Royal College of
Physicians and Surgeons of
Canada, provides training in
six specific areas, including
cognitive impairment,
medication management,
trauma and falls, atypical
presentations, discharge
planning and end-of-life care.
