New COO at Hess Collection John Grant is the new chief operating offi- cer for The Hess Col- lection winery in Napa Valley, where he will oversee sales, marketing and busi- ness operations at the winery in the Mount Veeder AVA. J buys vineyards on Sonoma Coast J Vineyards & Winery of Healdsburg an- nounced the acquisition of two vineyards for the label's Pinot Noir program. The new prop- erties include 44 planted vineyard acres in the Sonoma Coast AVA—the brand's first vines outside the Russian River Valley AVA—planted primarily to Dijon clones of Pinot Noir. Young's Market donates to SSU The distributor Young's Market Co. is making a $250,000 gift to the Sonoma State Univer- sity Wine Business Institute to help fund the construction of the institute's building on the SSU campus. The donation will be used to complete a boardroom at the Wine Spectator Learning Center, which is expected to be com- plete in 2016. Atlas, Price buy Sonoma Coast vineyard Atlas Vineyard Management and Price Fam- ily Vineyards announced their formation of a joint venture to purchase the 17-acre Wa- lala Vineyard in the Sonoma Coast AVA. The vineyard, which has been farmed by Atlas staff since it was planted in 2005, is located along a ridge on a 97.5-acre prop- erty at 1,200-feet elevation just a few miles from the ocean.
