conditions, and typically are torn
down, parts replaced, rebuilt and
prepped for the next race. On the
other hand, TT Spec vehicles are
not subject to the punishment of
an 800-plus horsepower engine
smearing a 5,000-plus pound
race truck across a 500 or 1000
mile race course. Even though a
TT Spec racer can fly across the
same treacherous race course, the
speeds won't be as high, throttle
response is not as explosive, and
component reliability has, in theory,
a better chance of lasting longer.
TT Spec trucks do get beat up and
must be gone through and fully
prepped for the next race, but the
maintenance costs are generally
less expensive. But start-up
financial requirements are close
enough so that a team running a TT
Spec will have a good idea of what
they'll need to run an Unlimited
Trophy Truck when they are ready.
The exciting part is TT Spec
trucks offer new drivers/teams
a springboard to hone skills and
ramp up experience until they
are ready for the top Trophy
Truck class, virtually by swapping
the engine from mild to exotic
horsepower. In reality, a team
that plans to go up to Unlimited
Trophy Trucks will purpose build
an entirely new vehicle, but they
also know what they want to
change or try in a new truck. TT
Spec is a vehicle that behaves the
same traversing desert terrain,
weighs the same, and uses all
the same hardware and chassis
design as Unlimited Trophy Truck.
For drivers and teams who want
to compete at the highest level
one day, the TT Spec class is a
logical, lock-step, path to rolling
through the arches at the end of
the Baja Peninsula some glorious
November day in the future. SJ
