Yet con- temporary artist Sophie Matisse has found her place in the art world, as she follows in the footsteps of world-renowned artist Henri Mat- isse—her great-grandfather. Sophie didn't start out with the assurance that she would equal the weight of her family name. In an effort to measure up, she re-created numerous world-famous paintings, each of which was missing its focal point. This Absentee signature series began with a Mona Lisa copy, sans its leading lady. Aptly named Be Back in Five Minutes, the sequence highlights the complexity of the original paintings' background. They were the first works for which Sophie received widespread recogni- tion, and they are what she is most known for today. Sophie's latest works are silk screens painted with bold symbols, bright colors, and vivid typefaces. Copies of this collection are now being sold at Ethan Allen exclusive- ly—alongside prints of works by the other Matisse—making her the store's newest featured artist. "I hope when people see these paintings," says the artist, "they will sense the tranquility they can provide through the color and peacefulness of the image." Ethan Allen describes them as honest.Five limited-edition pieces are presently on display, and priced at $1,999 each. Included in the collection are 4 Degrees, B Clear, Flight, His Mas- ter's Voice, and On Air. The store's inclusion of contem- porary art has been well received since the original release of the Modern Masters Collection in June 2014. "This collection from Sophie 0atisse is magnificent," says Ethan Allen designer Mary Algiers. "It is fresh and contemporary with the soft, beautifully muted color palettes."
