Kansas City at Philadelphia 2003 CHAMPS READY TO DEFEND MISL TITLE by Amy Keller end and the 2003-04 Major Indoor Soccer League season rapidly approaching, the 2003 MISL Championship Baltimore Blast is ready to get back on the playing field to defend its title. The Blast is back with a new coaching staff and some new players but with the same drive and dedication for which that the franchise is known. W In June the Blast announced that Tim Wittman would take over the head coaching position and that recently retired Jason Dieter would sign on as assistant coach. Wittman served as assistant coach for the Blast's play- ith the sum- mer of 2003 nearing its off run last season and played for the Blast in the original MISL from 1981-1991, winning one cham- pionship with the team in 1983-84. He won a sec- ond championship with the San Diego Sockers at the completion of the 1991-92 and returned last season to his beloved Blast. Wittman and Dieter plan to keep the heart of the team intact and add a few veter- ans, who can immediately impact the team. The first player personnel move came in mid-July when the Blast announced that veteran defender Sean Bowers had been traded to San Diego for the MISL's second-leading scorer, Carlos "Chile" Farias. Farias, a 2003 All-Star and Second-Team All-MISL selection, spent the 2002-03 season with the Sockers and played briefly with the Harrisburg Heat in 1997-98. With 111 points to his credit last season, Farias will con- tribute to the Blast's already strong offensive presence. A veteran of the MISL, Continental Indoor Soccer League, World Indoor Soccer League and A-League, Farias will add to the scoring efforts of forwards Tarik Walker, Lee Tschantret and rising star P.J. Wakefield. 18• August/September 2003 • GOAL Indoor For the first time in 11 years, Blast fans will be watch- ing the Blast play without defenders Dieter and Lance Johnson. Dieter and Johnson retired following the Blast's 2003 championship but remain close to the organization. Dieter will remain with the Blast as assistant coach, and Johnson has taken a full-time position in the Commercial Lending department of 1st Mariner Bank. After celebrating the franchise's most successful season in almost two decades, the Blast players settled into 10 weeks of Baltimore Blast Summer Soccer Camps. With 24 sessions of Blast Camp, plus Team Camps, the players taught the game to more than 1,000 youth soccer players throughout the Baltimore Metropolitan area. The pros and the youths enjoyed a summer full of skill enhancement, sportsmanship and fun. As the 2003-04 MISL season kicks off, the Baltimore Blast is looking to build upon last season's success and continue to thrill the home fans at 1st Mariner Arena!
