He told her to fix it. They talked about the
website and the facility and, before she left,
Jerry challenged her to find a business within
Total Turf that she would like to run and to
put together a business plan. "Let us help
you develop that," he said. "Total Turf is an
incubator for new businesses that are sports-
related."
Because Total Turf partners with Virtua, a
multi-hospital healthcare organization, the
facility offers the services of a certified sports
trainer on site.
Sometimes, if a child gets hurt, his or her
parents may make a trip to the emergency
room and spend several hours there before
learning the injury is no cause for concern.
At Total Turf, a player can be evaluated by
a certified trainer for free. If the injury is
serious, a call is made to the family's
hospital, where they are offered "red carpet
treatment," which
includes a minimal wait
time. "All my employees
are CPR trained because
the CPR folks are on
the premises. Athletic
trainers work 60 hours a
week. They walk around
in case someone gets
hurt, someone needs
ice, a finger goes one
way when it should have
gone the other way."
The four men who
planned and developed
Total Turf have benefitted
from each others'
good ideas and hard work. The business has
continued to grow because the community has
become involved. The community's good ideas
and hard work have also contributed to the
success of the business.
For example, Total Turf recently acquired South
Jersey Sports Digest, an online magazine.
Without the support of the sports community,
SJSportsDigest.com would not be possible.
The site features stories, news, photos,
videos and much more. Much of the content is
provided by athletes and sports enthusiasts,
who also write or take pictures or create
videos. It is a space for athletes to come
together.
In some ways, the sports community in South
Jersey is fragmented. For example, during
the day, professional athletes come to Total
Turf to work out. They do not want to talk to
anyone. They come because it's quiet, and they
