Most famous for his Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1, better known as Whistler's Mother, Whistler attained a level of fame that "transcends the art world," says Sara Bo- gosian, president and executive director of both the Whistler House Museum of Art and the Lowell Art Association, Inc. As such, Bogosian has dedicated more time than most to the preservation of Whistler's legacy. Built in 1823 by engineers from the Lowell Machine Shop at the height of the Industrial Revolution, the three-story Federal-style home now known as the Whistler House Museum of Art was later purchased by the famous painter's father, Major George Washington Whistler, a noted railroad engineer. James McNeill Whistler was born in 1834, and was christened at Saint Anne's Episco- pal Church in downtown Lowell.
