How Students Can Help Reinvent Higher Ed in collaboration with the University Innovation Fellows Program Tuesday, March 8 | 11:00am – 2:00pm JW Marriott Salon 3 Some may think of students simply as customers of higher education, yet leading schools have discovered that students can play a far more strategic role as co-designers of the educational experience. This Summit will be structured in two 90-minute active blocks (you may attend one or both): in the first, you will hear the student voice, from leaders trained to impact how learning happens at their institutions, and apply design thinking to frame opportunities for change in higher ed. In the second block, you will go deeper into design thinking strategies and collaborate with panelists to distill bold ideas into experiments that you can try to make a difference at your organization. K12 Social Innovation: Design 4 Impact in collaboration with Avenues: The World School Tuesday, March 8 | 11:00am – 2:00pm JW Marriott Salon 4 This summit explores social innovation as a vehicle for real-world problem solving, design thinking, entrepreneur- ialism, service and student-led work. Students and teachers from the Social Innovation Program at Avenues will present their projects, including design challenges, original curricu- lum and a conference recently hosted at the school. At the summit, teachers will briefly outline the goals and utility of SI curriculum and take Q&A. Students will run a mini-design challenge with attendees, create a spontaneous case study and class exercise, and examine the value and scope of student-led event planning and management as a particular variation of community-facing work. Personalized Learning and Student Success hosted by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Tuesday, March 8 | 2:00pm – 6:00pm JW Marriott Salons 6 & 8 Join grantees, partners and friends of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in a broad call to action aimed at expand- ing postsecondary student success. In many public access institutions, as many as 6 in 10 students do not complete a degree within six years. We can do better. Engage with us in this daylong exploration of innovative solutions, implemen- tation challenges and the overarching values of access and equity driving this work. The summit features working ses- sions, a showcase of solutions in development, a town hall meeting and fun and excitement throughout, culminating in an offsite celebration of student success with live music and a thought-provoking short performance piece! Designing a Student-Centric University in collaboration with Minerva Schools Tuesday, March 8 | 3:00pm – 6:00pm JW Marriott Salon 2 Students will be broken into groups at the start of the ses- sion to brainstorm how they would design a student-centric university, with each group focusing on a unique aspect of the educational experience -- curriculum, assessments, co-curricular activities, mobility and exploration of diverse communities, and job preparation. Session leaders will provide valuable insights throughout the session, prompting attending students to consider different points of view. At the end of the session, groups will give presentations of how they would design a student-centric approach across the range of experiences that comprise the core of a modern university. Transforming Education With Learners at the Center in collaboration with Education Reimagined Tuesday, March 8 | 3:00pm – 6:00pm JW Marriott Salon 3 How do we realize a new future of learning in which every child fulfills their boundless potential? Join us to explore the learner-centered universe. Play with and expand your notions of where, how, when and with whom learning hap- pens. Engage with leading pioneers and hear about their transformational journeys to reimagine and create learning environments that work for all learners. Whether you are just beginning to explore or have been on the learner-centered path for decades, walk away inspired with new ideas to redesign learning in your own community. Reaching Gold Standard Project Based Learning in collaboration with the Buck Institute for Education Wednesday, March 9 | 11:00am – 6:30pm JW Marriott Salon 1 Project Based Learning (PBL) is a hot trend in K-12 edu- cation, which is good news for 21st century students and teachers, but there's danger in popularity. If not done well, PBL could become yesterday's trend. Poorly designed and managed projects could backfire on teachers. School and district leaders might not see that PBL is not a simple peda- gogy and sustaining PBL over time requires careful planning, commitment, and cultural change. In our summit, four highly interactive, hands-on sessions will help teachers design proj- ects that meet our model for "gold standard PBL" and guide leaders in planning its systemic implementation. 32 SXSWedu 2016 Summits
