Chase teams are crucial to every score race team, so coordination is key to making sure that teams are available to get to their race vehicle anywhere along the race course. Top race team owners, managers and crew chiefs often manage and coordinate their activities on the course, but always making sure that safety be the major priority. "Once the course map comes out and we know where we're going, we can put out an itinerary of who's going where and what stop each chase truck is going to go at," says Sean Hoglund, Logistics Director for Terrible Herbst Motorsports. Hoglund also points out it's important to stock and take inventory of what goes inside the chase truck, to make sure it has all the correct tools and parts. Because there can be many volunteers and new people helping a team for a big race like the SCORE Baja 1000, experienced team coordinators like Amber Malloy for Rob MacCachren Motorsports, makes sure that each team member has wrist bands with their names and personal information so in case of an injury, its readily available. Having some kind of way to indicate your vehicle is a chase truck while on the race course, is also an important safety factor. "One of the problems of traveling through the dust in Baja is that racers are not expecting a slow moving vehicle," says Kevin Davis, owner of Green Army Motorsports. "Having a market or flashing light on the vehicle so that the guy coming through the dust can see you."
