We may have science on our side, but we need to educate consumers to counter the scare tactics of the activists. MEXICO A significant focus this summer has also been on resolving problems with the suspension agreements between the U.S. and Mexican governments. Again, a long, tedious legal process that is essential to addressing the lack of sugar for our domestic cane refineries and directly impacting both the beet and cane industries. APPROPRIATIONS With a very shortened congressional calendar this year, along with the impending elections, the appropriations process has once again floundered in both Houses. We must always keep a watchful eye out for attacks on the sugar program, but there is little patience for wading into sugar policy this year. The ASGA summer board meeting will be held in Portland, Ore., with a visit to the Willamette Valley to see first-hand seed production and participate in the celebration of Betaseed's major facility renovation in Tangent on July 28. Seed is so fundamentally important to our industry that we want our national leaders to see first-hand all that goes into making great seed for our growers. INTERN HELPS A special thank you to Jack Brainard, (son of John and Janet Brainard of Ada, Minn.), our 2016 Cleavinger Intern for all of his help this summer in our office. Jack was very active in producing very important information for our lobbying efforts, some of which will be shared with you in the months ahead and in fact will be used by a broad spectrum of commodity groups and farm organizations. His work will make a difference as we go into the 2018 Farm Bill. It is always a pleasure to see such outstanding young men and women experience what it is like to work for farmers on so many crucial issues that impact them. We're just hired men - in suits! n
