In the olden days, spinning flax was considered a respectable way for an unmarried woman to earn a living. After the stalks of the plant had been soaked and beaten, the fibers would be spun into a fine thread called linen. The spinner needed to mould the fibers into a twisted shape, so she would use a distaff to hold the flax fibers. From spinning comes the words "distaff", meaning the female side of a family, and "spinster" meaning an unmarried woman.
