United Counties of Leeds and Grenville Council is asking the province to withdraw changes to the minimum wage and the Employment Standards Act until a com- prehensive economic impact analysis is com- pleted. The Ontario govern- ment announced last month that the minimum wage will increase to $14 on January 1, 2018 and $15 the following year, a 31.5 per cent increase. Council passed a reso- lution at their June 22 meeting. "The speed of this increase is unprecedented in the Provincial Govern- ment and far above public sector increases allowed" by the province. It asks that the changes be with- drawn until such time they have done their due dili- gence by providing resi- dents and small business owners of Ontario with an impact analysis, including mitigation measures in order to help businesses transition into any regula- tory changes," it reads. The resolution will be sent to Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne, various Ministers and the Associa- tion of Municipalities of Ontario. "We need to know if the Premier has a plan to help small businesses," said Robin Jones, Mayor of Westport and Warden of the United Counties. Jones put forth the motion, adding her munic- ipality has many small businesses that may not be able to meet the changes. "We have to have some- thing to help keep small businesses from going bankrupt," she said. A pie contest and sale is a perennial favourite at the heritage festival. Judges Doris Jones, Rob Roberts, and Sean Rodgers chose : First Gail Myatt's apple lime maple pie; Second Barb Weir's Gluten-free Chocolate Truffle Pie; Third Mary Ann Roberts' Key Lime Pie. United Counties raise concern over speed, size of minimum wage hike The Township of Rideau Lakes has secured a donation of $60,000 from the Five B Family Foundation of Long Sault for upgrades to halls. The $60,000 will be distributed to meet needs identified at the Newboro Hall, Morton Hall and the Old Town Hall in Delta. The Newboro Hall will be getting accessible bath- rooms and a kitchen upgrade. The new water efficient toilets will reduce costs by decreasing the flow of water to the hold- ing tank which regularly incurs costs for emptying. The Morton Hall will have its parking lot upgraded as well as receiving other facility enhancements. The Old Town Hall in Delta which is operated and owned by the Delta Mill Society will be receiving $5,000 for digi- tal media capabilities, a request they had made to the township. The venue is used for a variety of func- tions and contributes to the vibrancy of the village. •Continued from page 1 clothes worn by the Lynn Sisters who were famous nurses in the area, and the vestments of the first parish priest of St. Edward's Fr. A Vin- tage post card collection, local church cookbooks, cookie cutter collection, and paintings of local Westport Buildings con- tributed to the display's overwhelming success. Plans are already under- way for next year's event slated for June 23, 2018. Westport's always a popular stop for bikers but next Saturday, July 8 it's a destination when the Rideau Thunder Motorcy- cle Show comes to Con- cession Street and Lock- wood Field. The second annual event includes custom and vintage bikes, vendors, food, clothing, draws, accessories, swap meet, live entertainment, show and shine and more are fea- tured with activities around the arena, Lockwood Field and onto the street. Concession Street will be closed to traffic between George and Spring Streets to accommodate the visi- tors who are expected to come from across Eastern Ontario. Competitions among bikes will be held as well with a show and shine with 13 categories. The Trevor Walsh Group will provide the entertainment on Saturday afternoon. There will also be food vendors and a beer garden. A true Cape Bretoner, and a veteran in the music industry with over 23 years of touring and performing, Walsh plays Celtic music but has added to the song list, music by many great rock/folk artists and many of their own original songs. Despite inclement weather, last year's event drew over 400 motorcy- cles. The event's profits, including donations from the door and sales of mer- chandise, will be going to benefit Westport's Friends of the Arena. For more information about the event go to their website www.rideauthun- der.ca or the Rideau Thun- der Facebook group.
