Nominations for the 2017 Bill Thake Memorial Award for Economic Development Leadership are now being accepted. Also called the War- den's Award, it recognizes a volunteer who has shown outstanding com- mitment and leadership resulting in the growth and vitality of the Leeds Grenville economy within the 10 member municipal- ities. It is presented at the annual Leeds Grenville Economic Development Summit on Fri., Nov. 17. Deadline is Fri., Sept., 29. Contact them at econ- dev@uclg.on.ca or call Deanna Clark at 613-342- 3840, ext. 5360. Township of Rideau Lakes council has directed staff to recruit an ad hoc committee of five resi- dents to make a council remuneration review. Council will have the ultimate decision to pass a bylaw to implement any new compensation pack- age which could take effect for the 2018-2022 term. A proposal by the CAO to have three representa- tives from the public plus the mayor and one coun- cillor was rejected. Councillors agreed that it would be preferable to have all five members from the public but have at least two members who have had council experi- ence. The new pay regime would be effective for the next council elected for the 2018-2022 term. The ad hoc committee candidates will be pre- screened by the CAO but will be chosen by council. Members of the com- mittee will be remunerated at the council rate of $50 a meeting plus mileage. In 2019 councillors stand to lose remuneration if the current rate of remu- neration is kept in place. A proposal by the federal government would drop the current tax exemption on one third of their com- pensation. The last remuneration bylaw was revised in 2014 when the honorarium for the mayor was set at $12,668 and councillors at $9.881. The bylaw sets hono- rariums to rise each year as the same rate deter- mined for township employees. Council can also charge for committee meetings and other occur- rences which have been authorized by council. •Continued from page 1 European company is get- ting. She and her husband Rob own and operate six rental houseboats as well as pontoon boats from their location beside the public boat launch in Port- land. She saw the mooring deal as special treatment and was successful in get- ting the same deal for her boats as part of an offer to allow the same price for fleets over five boats. The deal is a good one for Rideau Lakes which has not had an issue of overcrowding by overnight guests at Port- land Harbour. "The $1660, a guaran- teed payment, would rep- resent 15 per cent of rev- enues for the Portland har- bour. Given there isn't capacity issue it's likely it won't remove other income. It will add to it," said Rideau Lakes CAO Mike Dwyer. Heins sees the deal as a loss for the Westport Har- bour and sees no advan- tage for the local econo- my, and that the lost rental revenue could go into improving the facility. "Our boats pay $50. They don't ever com- plain," said Heins whose boats are frequently seen in Westport Harbour She is skeptical of the amount of money Le Boat's visitors will be dropping into the local economy, an estimated $824 per day compared to $319, adjusted from a 2011 Rideau Canal eco- nomic impact study. "They may come with $400 in groceries. They may eat out once or twice. It's just not the type of clientele. It's so inflated, what they are going to bring into the economy," said Heins. An archaeology pro- ject in Lyndhurst needs some help this month to help uncover Lyndhurst's industrial past. Local historian Art Shaw is leading the effort which will be exploring the village's industrial past. Six days of digging to explore 10 test pits begins Tues., Sept. 5. Up to 14 field workers and four lab workers can be accommodated per day. Field workers will be digging one meter square test pits which will be dug to a depth of bedrock or undisturbed earth. Lab workers will be cleaning the artifacts which will be discovered. "There will be new people most days. There will be instruction every morning. There is no need to be shy there is instruction and supervi- sors as you dig," said Shaw who is recruiting volunteers. Digging will be on September 5, 6, 7, 8, 11 and 12. Work is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a break for lunch. The dig area, on the north side of the creek on the east side of the stone bridge is of interest as the site of Upper Canada's first iron works in 1810. In another era of tech- nology sites beside waterfalls were of indus- trial value because of the waterfall could be har- nessed by many indus- tries. This year's dig is part of a multi-year project which will also include excavation on the oppo- site bank on a property newly acquired by the town in 2016. The new township property has value for heritage interpretation beside the creek and mill pond as a park. The site could be an important asset for the community as an interpretation site once archaeology on the site is completed. Volunteers can contact Art Shaw for information and scheduling by email- ing artshaw@ripnet.com. Heather and Rob Heins operate Big Rideau Lake Boat Rentals from their home in Portland where they have a fleet of six houseboats as well as pontoon boats.
