The Westport and Rideau Lakes Chamber of Commerce is encouraging members to attend their annual general meeting Wed., Nov. 15 at the West- port Legion 542. The group, which has a healthy membership base, was on the verge of disap- pearing in 2015 but has held its own for a second year in a row. "We are maintaining 89 members which is where we were last year," said chamber president John Pringle who noted that number includes some new members. At the meeting the chamber leadership will be looking for some new blood to keep that momen- tum going. The group has eight directors who have given their intention to stay on but are seeking another four. A number of positions are open including secre- tary and the coordination of the welcome centre. This month's meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. with a social hour with the busi- ness meeting starting at 7 p.m. Several hundred people watched the demolition of Duck's Roadhouse by Hale's Excavation and Trucking Saturday, while also taking in the pump- kin carving at Lockwood Park. The owner of the property, Tracey Phillips of Westport Village Phar- macy sold bricks from Duck's, taking in approxi- mately $1,000. She and Hale's both matched the funds, resulting in a $3,000 donation to West- port's Friends of the Arena. Rideau Lakes fire- fighters responded to two fires over the past week that destroyed a home near Jones Falls and a garage near Newboro. Mon., Oct. 23 they were called to the house fire on Jones Falls Road after a passersby called at 10:30 p.m. after spotting a glow in the sky. When firefighters arrived the home was fully involved. The team also had to deal with a wildfire which was head- ing northwest on the property. Firefighters' efforts were further hampered by the collapse of the homes steel roof into the walk-out basement. "We had to pick it up and move it. We had to pick up the pieces of steel roof," said Fire chief Jay DeBernardi. Firefighters attended the scene from the Delta, Elgin and Portland sta- tions and ferried water from Morton Creek. They had left the scene around 3 a.m. Investigation into the cause of the blaze is ongoing. • • • Firefighters were called to a fire in a large garage on Hutchings Road Sunday around 6:30 p.m. after owner Scott Adrain called in the emergency. "When the owner dis- covered it, it was fully involved in the interior," said Fire Chief Jay DeBernardi. Firefighters were able to protect the home on the property which was a short distance from the garage which contained plenty of fuel for the fire. Inside the garage were vehicles as well as con- tainers of waste oil, and propane and acetylene tanks. The building was of wood construction covered with steel. "It was under control within an hour. We had to basically take the steel off to make sure we had it extinguished," said the chief who had firefight- ers on scene from the Westport, Portland and Elgin stations. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. •Continued from page 1 Robin Jones sees the need to develop plans to address issues which were identified. "As a follow up to the report, I am meeting with Staff from the Counties in November to discuss three strategies to move forward with this report and they include: safety, as well as the perception of safety, in each of the Counties' social housing communi- ties, a plan for seniors who live or are waiting to live in social housing and evic- tions of tenants who refuse to comply with the rules of the Counties and provide support to staff preparing cases for the Landlord Tenant Advisory Tribunal," said Jones. The United Counties took nine residents from across their counties-wide portfolio in front of the tri- bunal in 2016 and suc- ceeded in getting two evicted. The Review-Mirror November 2, 2017 – 3 The two people origi- nally charged in the mur- der of former Westport area resident Adrian Gre- gory pleaded guilty to lesser offences over the past week. Pershaw sur- vived. The RCMP had initial- ly been called to a com- plaint of a vehicle fire in the industrial park at about 12:45 a.m. Investigators deter- mined this was not a ran- dom shooting but involved a drug deal gone wrong Shane Terry Tym, aged 28, of Chilliwack, B.C., and Sarah Jane Posthumus, aged 29, of Tara, Ontario were origi- nally charged with first degree murder and attempted murder.
