It was widely viewed by those attended as his first victory at Purdue, winning the press conference, so to speak. TWEET OF THE WEEK "Big Ten beware!! Best coach I've ever had" Miami Dolphins' wide receiver Brian Hartline (@BrianHartline) in response to Purdue's hiring of Darrell Hazell on Wednesday. Hazell was Hartline's wide receivers coach at Ohio State. Coach Darrell Hazell becomes the 18th Big Ten coach to have led a Mid-American Conference team since the league was formed in 1946. Prior to Tuesday, Purdue was the only school of the "original" 10 Big Ten teams to not have a coach from the MAC. Stu Holcomb, who coached Purdue from 1947-55, directed Miami in 1942-43, four years before the conference had officially formed. Here's the list of Big Ten schools and how many coaches they hired who had previous MAC experience: Illinois (1) Tim Beckman Indiana (4) John Pont, Bill Mallory, Terry Hoeppner, Bill Lynch Iowa (1) Frank Lauterbur Michigan (2) Bo Schembechler, Brady Hoke Michigan State (1) Nick Saban Minnesota (2) Glen Mason, Jerry Kill Northwestern (3) Ara Parseghian, John Pont, Randy Walker Ohio State (2) Woody Hayes, Urban Meyer Wisconsin (1) Dave McClain Here's how they have fared: Ties 12 Losses 544 Wins 42% 756 58% This Week In Purdue History Dec. 5, 1976 • Jim Young is announced as Purdue's 29th head football coach, just eight days after Alex Agase was dismissed as the Boilermakers' head man. Young, who had coached at Arizona after being an assistant for Bo Schembechler at Michigan, agreed to a package worth about $70,000 annually. Dec. 2, 1986 • Just 10 days after the Bucket game, former Purdue assistant Ron Meyer is expected to be named the Boilermaker coach to replace Leon Burtnett. But at the last moment, the Indianapolis Colts hire Meyer, leaving Purdue to re-open the search and hire Fred Akers eight days later. Akers' package was about $200,000 annually. Dec. 6, 1990 • Just one week after Akers resigned under pressure, athletic director George King hires Jim Colletto to steer the ship. Colletto, who had been a finalist when Akers was hired four years earlier, came to Purdue after serving as Coach John Cooper's offensive coordinator at Ohio State.
